Implement an actual shuffle function

Yes, you read that right.  The "shuffle" function in Spotify is nothing more than a randomizer.  There's a difference?  YES.

RANDOM - Play one song.  The next song can be ANY song in your playlist.  Including the one you just listened to.  Though I've never had this specifically happen, I literally just heard the same song that I heard 2 songs ago.  This is how Spotify's "shuffle" currently functions.

SHUFFLE - Take your entire list, shuffle them (like cards), and play the first song in the shuffle.  Once finished, move that song off the pile.  Once the pile is depleted, shuffle the deck again and start over (maybe pop a message up).

I know enough about programming (not much) to know that shuffling is probably a bit harder than random, but come on.  I may be in the minority, but I don't have a lot of little playlists.  I have one list with nearly a thousand songs in it, because I like all the music, and am rarely not in the mood for one of those songs.  But what I can't stand is hearing the same song over and over again.  I think there may even be songs in my list I haven't heard yet, while I've heard others 4-5 times.

I know it may not matter much, but I would probably lay down the money for at least a year subscription if this feature was implemented.

EDIT: Another user pointed out that I can see what all is queued up in my shuffle by clicking the Play Queue link, and that Spotify supposedly sets up a rolling shuffle of 50 songs.  It would be nice if this range could be expanded to say 50-100% of your playlist.

EDIT 4/6/12: I just dealt with the same song 16 tracks later.  The song played the first time yesterday afternoon.  I went home, listened for a bit on my home PC (just a few songs), then started listening again this morning.  If the list recycles itself after a day, or if you log in from another computer, I see that as an area for improvement.

Updated: 2016-02-05

Hey folks, we have made some improvements to our shuffle algorithm that we are turning on as a default for all users. We'd love your feedback on how your shuffle experience changes after today (Feb 5, 2016). Thanks for your feedback, your comments are essential to helping us improve Spotify.

Update Aug 2018:

Hi folks, it sounds like quite a few of you are experiencing only the top tracks in a playlist shuffling/ playing when using Connect. This has already been reported here.

We’ve given a transparent status there explaining there isn’t a current timeline for a fix. Please do leave a VOTE there if you’re experiencing the issue and a comment. We can then bring this information back internally to show the size of the issue for our users.

If however you are experiencing issues with Shuffle when not using Connect, please get back to us in this thread we've the questions we've listed and click +VOTE. Thank you!

This « discussion » is a little one sided for me... we have unimpressed paying customers on one side and silence on the other

This thread is « alive » in the sense that ppl are posting to it. But its dead in the sense that Spotify owners don't read or care about it; also the problem is flagged as resolved (lol)

Welcome pal

The issue is not resolved! I have close to 800 songs and in 4 hours, I swear the same 30 will play over and over and over!
Can someone from Spotify answer us? Either tell us it's never going to happen and you can't figure out how to make our songs shuffle or you're working on it and expect it to be done at the end of this month. ANYTHING will be appreciated. I'm getting sick of songs I love, due to the fact that they're played over and over and over and over, while my other 770 + don't even get played once!!!!!
Thank you

I find it tends to get "stuck" on a certain artist, or songs added within a
certain time frame. It sounds silly, but sometimes turning Spotify off and
then on again helps clear out the system ad then I get more random music...

My issue has been less about hearing the same songs (my playlists are all
over 3k), but more so on playing the same artist in a short amount of time.
I may have say 100 songs (to be generous) from one artists in a playlist of
4,000+ songs... even though the songs are different, I dont want to hear 3
songs from the same artist within an hour

The shuffle indeed only shuffles maximum 80 songs from  the playlist you are selecting. It takes 80 songs shuffles them then places  them in queue. If you look at the queue you will see the 80 songs that have been shuffled and these same songs will play  over and over on a loop. Very disappointing they cannot  shuffle and queue the ENTIRE playlist.

Please fix.

Seeing how the shuffle algorithm seems to play the songs that have only recently been played... Does anyone know if google music / amazon music has a better experience? This thread is 122 pages, so many years old....

Im really not sure why I was directed to post here. Spotify thinks this feature has been implemented, theyre not likely to even look here.

This still doesn't work, a year and a half since it was solved, and I'm probably going to cancel my brand new subscription because of it and go back to apple music.

When presented with a short playlist it seems fine, but when presented with a couple thousand songs (my library!) it only shuffles a small selection of the upcoming library, so if i'm sorted by artist when I hit shuffle play I always get A artists (and a very heavy load of ABBA). Or if I choose a song, I get a selection of songs with the same letter as that artist.

It's mind boggling that this isn't fixed YEARS LATER.

Searching shows this is a common complaint, and you guys obviously just don't care or want my money, so *shrug*

This is lazy programming, bad customer support, and you should feel bad.

If anyone needs a freelance software developer. Get in contact! Haha. Sorry had to make the best of it...

With other news, yeah this sucks pretty much. Has anyone had any good experiences with transferring their playlist to some alternative service?

As someone has previously stated, this problem is marked as solved. How do
you open a new problem? Anyone know?
