Implement an actual shuffle function

Yes, you read that right.  The "shuffle" function in Spotify is nothing more than a randomizer.  There's a difference?  YES.

RANDOM - Play one song.  The next song can be ANY song in your playlist.  Including the one you just listened to.  Though I've never had this specifically happen, I literally just heard the same song that I heard 2 songs ago.  This is how Spotify's "shuffle" currently functions.

SHUFFLE - Take your entire list, shuffle them (like cards), and play the first song in the shuffle.  Once finished, move that song off the pile.  Once the pile is depleted, shuffle the deck again and start over (maybe pop a message up).

I know enough about programming (not much) to know that shuffling is probably a bit harder than random, but come on.  I may be in the minority, but I don't have a lot of little playlists.  I have one list with nearly a thousand songs in it, because I like all the music, and am rarely not in the mood for one of those songs.  But what I can't stand is hearing the same song over and over again.  I think there may even be songs in my list I haven't heard yet, while I've heard others 4-5 times.

I know it may not matter much, but I would probably lay down the money for at least a year subscription if this feature was implemented.

EDIT: Another user pointed out that I can see what all is queued up in my shuffle by clicking the Play Queue link, and that Spotify supposedly sets up a rolling shuffle of 50 songs.  It would be nice if this range could be expanded to say 50-100% of your playlist.

EDIT 4/6/12: I just dealt with the same song 16 tracks later.  The song played the first time yesterday afternoon.  I went home, listened for a bit on my home PC (just a few songs), then started listening again this morning.  If the list recycles itself after a day, or if you log in from another computer, I see that as an area for improvement.

Updated: 2016-02-05

Hey folks, we have made some improvements to our shuffle algorithm that we are turning on as a default for all users. We'd love your feedback on how your shuffle experience changes after today (Feb 5, 2016). Thanks for your feedback, your comments are essential to helping us improve Spotify.

Update Aug 2018:

Hi folks, it sounds like quite a few of you are experiencing only the top tracks in a playlist shuffling/ playing when using Connect. This has already been reported here.

We’ve given a transparent status there explaining there isn’t a current timeline for a fix. Please do leave a VOTE there if you’re experiencing the issue and a comment. We can then bring this information back internally to show the size of the issue for our users.

If however you are experiencing issues with Shuffle when not using Connect, please get back to us in this thread we've the questions we've listed and click +VOTE. Thank you!

Great news and useful information, @corachopin and @Jaked000.  Thanks.

I am listening . . . .  More later if anybody has problems with the Next layer of Repeats and NeverPlays from any playlist of 9K tracks.

This Shuffle function sucks.  Of the thousands of songs I have saved, it shuffles the same ones all the time.  **bleep**?!?!?!?!

I think I'll actually be canceling my spotify over this and one other problem; when listening to an artist radio, one specific artist keeps coming up and no matter how much I thumbs down said artist, they pop up almost as frequently, if not more, than the artist the radio is based off of. I tried Amazon music and it seems to respond to this feedback but Spotify doesn't seem to. I like Spotify, but these are two important features that are being executed so poorly and it's too frustrating. I hope you can sort it all out because I would love to keep using it if these features were to work correctly.

@mramsden90, I like your style.  You have a good idea of what you want, and you are eloquent about what you want-- Plus I think you are right in what you want-- So Kudos!-- even though Spotify religiously blocks the operation of any Kudos button on this discussion-- even by any "user programming fix" for that serious bug that any of us users have been able to invent so far.  (I laugh.)

Do come back and tell us if you find that Amazon or [any other streaming service] provides you what you want--

But we have tried Amazon and [all the others] ourselves enough to see that they don't do it right for us either-- so we users have to "do the programming" ourselves anywhere we would want to go to fix these bugs that you mention.

Accordingly for now, my friends find it easiest to fix the bugs you mention here using the tools and previous versions of the Spotify player that Spotify lets us use here on Spotify-- most of us have family accounts to provide those in our household with the "programming fixes" to the bugs that you mention.

Did you try the "shuffle programming fix" that the esteemed @bytebodger has provided >> in his earlier posting <<  for us to use to fix the bugs you mention in the Spotify shuffle?

Is there some other user requirement that @bytedodger or any other fixer of these bugs should expand for us?

(Shakespeare aside)  There is also a "user programming fix" for that thumbsDown bug that you mention-- But I am trying to trim the discussion for now to deal with what it is that you want most.

How about freaking expanding the automatic playlist that is created when you hit shuffle on your "songs" playlist, so that I don't have the whole day listening to the same 50 songs, in the same order, over and over again? This is the kind of stuff that makes me want to give up on Spotify and just use youtube...

Qlippoth

@bytebodger This is quite promising and awesome! The only thing I'm running into is that I'm only able to load 4 of my playlists into your magical shuffling machine--am I doing something wrong? Thanks again.

bytebodger

@Qlippoth: It should pull back all your playlists.  I'm not sure why it would be leaving some out.  When I use utility, it puts all 12 of my playlists in the dropdown menu.  Keep in mind, this won't show you things that you may see in the Spotify player, like "Your Daily Mix", "Recently Played", etc.  Those things aren't playlists.

What are the names of the playlists that you're NOT seeing in the dropdown menu from my utility?

I've finally had enough with this issue of playing the same songs over and over again while on "shuffle all." I will be cancelling my premium subscription at the end of the month and am taking suggestions for other online listening applications. I am fed up with this contempt from Spotify on what I can only think saves them money by replaying songs we've already listened to so much so that I am willing to forgo several thousand songs I've already saved in the app.

My biggest playlist contains 2.5k tracks and I'm experiencing the very same problem. The Android shuffle function completely fails me when applied over the whole 2.5k tracks... the only workaround I have found so far is to prefilter the playlist before shuffling:

- Open overzided playlist and swipe up to the "filter" field
- Type 1 or 2 letters (usually a random vowel and a consonant)
- Hit Shuffle

Shuffle will now only apply to the filtered selection and play through artist, album and track-titles containing this letter-combination.

dear BYTEBODGER

I have a premium account, a family one.
I tried your addon and I see all my playlists but when I select one to
shuffle I get this message:
Oops!
We're sorry - an unspecified error has occurred. Please try again.

Is it possible that you addon works just with SINGLE premium account?

thanks and sorry to bother you with this
