Implement an actual shuffle function

Yes, you read that right.  The "shuffle" function in Spotify is nothing more than a randomizer.  There's a difference?  YES.

RANDOM - Play one song.  The next song can be ANY song in your playlist.  Including the one you just listened to.  Though I've never had this specifically happen, I literally just heard the same song that I heard 2 songs ago.  This is how Spotify's "shuffle" currently functions.

SHUFFLE - Take your entire list, shuffle them (like cards), and play the first song in the shuffle.  Once finished, move that song off the pile.  Once the pile is depleted, shuffle the deck again and start over (maybe pop a message up).

I know enough about programming (not much) to know that shuffling is probably a bit harder than random, but come on.  I may be in the minority, but I don't have a lot of little playlists.  I have one list with nearly a thousand songs in it, because I like all the music, and am rarely not in the mood for one of those songs.  But what I can't stand is hearing the same song over and over again.  I think there may even be songs in my list I haven't heard yet, while I've heard others 4-5 times.

I know it may not matter much, but I would probably lay down the money for at least a year subscription if this feature was implemented.

EDIT: Another user pointed out that I can see what all is queued up in my shuffle by clicking the Play Queue link, and that Spotify supposedly sets up a rolling shuffle of 50 songs.  It would be nice if this range could be expanded to say 50-100% of your playlist.

EDIT 4/6/12: I just dealt with the same song 16 tracks later.  The song played the first time yesterday afternoon.  I went home, listened for a bit on my home PC (just a few songs), then started listening again this morning.  If the list recycles itself after a day, or if you log in from another computer, I see that as an area for improvement.

I've been having issues for days and I've sent questions and asked for help everywhere. No anwer. Nothing useful. My shuffle is not working and I'm sick of wasting skips as well as hearing the same songs in the same order every single time.

Are you actually going to do anything, Spotify?

Might be an old post, but I still notice a horrible "shuffle" on my playlist.  I might get a back and forth between two albums, then it will finally move on to back and forth with two more ablums.  If I wanted to listen to all the songs from Les Mis, I would put on just that album...shuffle still doesn't seem to do much but bounce around to the same 50 songs on my list of 242.

I think it's to entice you to get Premium. The horrible shuffle makes people skip songs and run out of skips and then want to buy Premium for it's unlimited number of skips. Spotify's trying to **bleep** us over to get money is what I'm thinking.

Possibly but its making us premium people want to cancel our membership.

You might want to contact Apple for this part becuase there shuffle is more than decent...

No I'm not going to Apple nor do I download my music, that's what I have spotify for right?

I've seen many topic's, like many many about shuffle that it sucks and idea's

and some even said: idea take in consideration, but yet there is nothing changed.
The amount of complains about the shuffle is big and yet (repeating myself) there is nothing changed,
Please go and fix this, because you can hardly claim it's a shuffle when you get familiar with the patron...

It's really frustrating when not even half of my library plays on shuffle mode. That's why I hear the same 15 songs over and over! Make the entire library play when shuffle is on, and dont repeat songs!

I can't believe that it is soooo hard to get the shuffle to work on all songs on a play list? While my shuffle does work, you can only shuffle the first 50 songs. It would seem odd that a technology / internet based company could find a way to have a real time shuffle feature??????

I have Premium and it still doesn't work well.

Getting super annoyed. When I play my list shuffled I get the same 30 or so songs.. My playlist has 2,000 songs in it.. I can get a different set of 30 or so songs by sorting the playlist by artist name and another set by sorting by title etc but no way to play all of my songs  😞

Hi.

I too have problems with the shuffle function.

And i actualy think it has started around when you implemented the new shuffle function.

For the past few years i've been primarily listening to this playlist at work:

7000+ Greatest Rock Hits https://open.spotify.com/user/1210526020/playlist/7muDkIH2NzEIGAZksXR0BT?si=qOrtTeWfQoeFeYHYLMEX1g

And the following song (just one example) plays at least twice a day:

used to love her - guns n' roses https://open.spotify.com/track/267BsRG0aX8LfeHsvCOdFA?si=tpq9VkzyQCyeH_Ruydz3Pg

Hope it will be better in time...
