Implement an actual shuffle function

Yes, you read that right.  The "shuffle" function in Spotify is nothing more than a randomizer.  There's a difference?  YES.

RANDOM - Play one song.  The next song can be ANY song in your playlist.  Including the one you just listened to.  Though I've never had this specifically happen, I literally just heard the same song that I heard 2 songs ago.  This is how Spotify's "shuffle" currently functions.

SHUFFLE - Take your entire list, shuffle them (like cards), and play the first song in the shuffle.  Once finished, move that song off the pile.  Once the pile is depleted, shuffle the deck again and start over (maybe pop a message up).

I know enough about programming (not much) to know that shuffling is probably a bit harder than random, but come on.  I may be in the minority, but I don't have a lot of little playlists.  I have one list with nearly a thousand songs in it, because I like all the music, and am rarely not in the mood for one of those songs.  But what I can't stand is hearing the same song over and over again.  I think there may even be songs in my list I haven't heard yet, while I've heard others 4-5 times.

I know it may not matter much, but I would probably lay down the money for at least a year subscription if this feature was implemented.

EDIT: Another user pointed out that I can see what all is queued up in my shuffle by clicking the Play Queue link, and that Spotify supposedly sets up a rolling shuffle of 50 songs.  It would be nice if this range could be expanded to say 50-100% of your playlist.

EDIT 4/6/12: I just dealt with the same song 16 tracks later.  The song played the first time yesterday afternoon.  I went home, listened for a bit on my home PC (just a few songs), then started listening again this morning.  If the list recycles itself after a day, or if you log in from another computer, I see that as an area for improvement.

Updated: 2016-02-05

Hey folks, we have made some improvements to our shuffle algorithm that we are turning on as a default for all users. We'd love your feedback on how your shuffle experience changes after today (Feb 5, 2016). Thanks for your feedback, your comments are essential to helping us improve Spotify.

Update Aug 2018:

Hi folks, it sounds like quite a few of you are experiencing only the top tracks in a playlist shuffling/ playing when using Connect. This has already been reported here.

We’ve given a transparent status there explaining there isn’t a current timeline for a fix. Please do leave a VOTE there if you’re experiencing the issue and a comment. We can then bring this information back internally to show the size of the issue for our users.

If however you are experiencing issues with Shuffle when not using Connect, please get back to us in this thread we've the questions we've listed and click +VOTE. Thank you!

It's almost mid-2018 and there are STILL shuffle problems.

I love spotify but this makes it unbearable. I always get the same songs, and in order to listen to a song I haven't heard in a while I have to skip the first 50 songs in my queue. It's really annoying opening the computer and listening to the same songs, sometimes even in the SAME order that I've already heard. It's frusturating. If this won't be fixed soon it's bye bye Spotify and hello Apple Music. No users should suffer from this problem, premuim or not. I'm premium btw.

Shuffle artist function needs to shuffle more than 20 songs before repeating. When an artist has 15+ albums it's a tiny selection.

Does not shuffle at all!

And currently 2 years later!

the shuffle on this is horrific!!! i have a play;ist nearly 500 songs on it and it plays the same songs over and over!!!! very very frustrating and should be resolved! we pay a monthy fee and to be honest this is starting to **bleep** me off! i might as well take my custom somewhere else!

My shuffling issue is:

I have a playlist of approx 1,000 songs. If I shuffle it, it does not play random songs from that playlist. Instead, Spotify will play a selection of the songs from my playlist, depending on how I've sorted the playlist at that moment.

So if I've sorted it by artist, shuffling that playlist will play a bunch of songs by artists whose name all start with the same letter (for instance, K, L, M, N).

If I've sorted my original playlist by ALBUM TITLE before shuffling, it will play a bunch of songs where the first letter of the album title are all similar.

If I've sorted by song length, it will play a bunch of songs that all have a similar song length (currently playing songs that all have a 3 minute play time, give or take 20 seconds).

So. Annoying. Just play random songs from my playlist!

After adding new songs or an entire album to my playlist and hit shuffle, Spotify will shuffle only these new songs. it will start to shuffle other songs only when these songs are played once. And it will not play these new songs until all the other songs are played.

So, I am adding a new album to my playlist and requesting a shuffle from Spotify and having to listen only this album! So i skip skip skip these songs and then I don't hear them at all for days. And when i start to hear them they come one after another. It takes a month for them to blend into my list. This is kind of absurd. It is a crime to call this feature "Shuffle".

This behaviour is consistent on IOS and OSX.

Looks like Spotify maintains a "last listened date" or maybe using just "added to list date" in this shuffle algorithm. I would be happier with a simple randomizer because it can not be more annoying than this experience.

Shuffle on Spotify is terrible! Instead of just playing random songs on a playlist here and there it now just picks one song and goes down from there.

Let's say you add a whole album to a playlist. If Spotify picks the first song on said album it will just play it right through. That's not what a "shuffle" is!

It also uses songs from the beginning of the playlist...so all those songs at the bottom you'll never hear. Just another way for a cheapskate company to get money from users. Thought I expected better!

My playlist plays songs from the same artist over and over again, which is only about 10% of my playlist. I would love to actually have a shuffle option

SHUFFLE WORKS On Google Play Music.

It still sucks in spotify.  I finally cancelled my spotify premium account until shuffle is improved.  Google Play Music is getting it done for me now.
