Implement an actual shuffle function

Yes, you read that right.  The "shuffle" function in Spotify is nothing more than a randomizer.  There's a difference?  YES.

RANDOM - Play one song.  The next song can be ANY song in your playlist.  Including the one you just listened to.  Though I've never had this specifically happen, I literally just heard the same song that I heard 2 songs ago.  This is how Spotify's "shuffle" currently functions.

SHUFFLE - Take your entire list, shuffle them (like cards), and play the first song in the shuffle.  Once finished, move that song off the pile.  Once the pile is depleted, shuffle the deck again and start over (maybe pop a message up).

I know enough about programming (not much) to know that shuffling is probably a bit harder than random, but come on.  I may be in the minority, but I don't have a lot of little playlists.  I have one list with nearly a thousand songs in it, because I like all the music, and am rarely not in the mood for one of those songs.  But what I can't stand is hearing the same song over and over again.  I think there may even be songs in my list I haven't heard yet, while I've heard others 4-5 times.

I know it may not matter much, but I would probably lay down the money for at least a year subscription if this feature was implemented.

EDIT: Another user pointed out that I can see what all is queued up in my shuffle by clicking the Play Queue link, and that Spotify supposedly sets up a rolling shuffle of 50 songs.  It would be nice if this range could be expanded to say 50-100% of your playlist.

EDIT 4/6/12: I just dealt with the same song 16 tracks later.  The song played the first time yesterday afternoon.  I went home, listened for a bit on my home PC (just a few songs), then started listening again this morning.  If the list recycles itself after a day, or if you log in from another computer, I see that as an area for improvement.

Updated: 2016-02-05

Hey folks, we have made some improvements to our shuffle algorithm that we are turning on as a default for all users. We'd love your feedback on how your shuffle experience changes after today (Feb 5, 2016). Thanks for your feedback, your comments are essential to helping us improve Spotify.

Update Aug 2018:

Hi folks, it sounds like quite a few of you are experiencing only the top tracks in a playlist shuffling/ playing when using Connect. This has already been reported here.

We’ve given a transparent status there explaining there isn’t a current timeline for a fix. Please do leave a VOTE there if you’re experiencing the issue and a comment. We can then bring this information back internally to show the size of the issue for our users.

If however you are experiencing issues with Shuffle when not using Connect, please get back to us in this thread we've the questions we've listed and click +VOTE. Thank you!

Shuffle does NOT work. It consistently groups songs by the same artist together or plays songs in the same order every time. It's infuriating.

I know this has been bought up many times before, but I have been noticing for a while now that shuffle mode (mostly on desktop) is quite repetitive. For example, I often find that songs from certain albums tend to crop up quite frequently;  a few days ago I noticed that it was the Rizzle Kicks - Stereotypical , Yesterday it was the Scorpions - Blackout, and today (rather embarrassingly) it was an album from the TV show "Victorious". I decided to run a test, I pressed shuffle, and recorded every song that came on.

I noticed that every song that played was within the 75 most recently added songs out of 1220ish songs, only 6% of my total library. Of course, I wasn't expecting to play 100% of my library within 23 songs, but I also wasn't expecting that little variety. I also noticed that songs from the Victorious album kept on playing, infact, 6 out of the 23 I played were from that one album, which was quite annoying (and embarrasing)

I also noticed that it kept on playing songs by Queens of the Stone Age, and the Fratellis, but only from one album. Funnily enough, they were both albums that I added a few weeks ago, so are in the 75 most recently added.

So really, I am asking for a more varied shuffle system, as good as I'm sure the algorithm is (and I've seen the blog post from 2014) It doesn't seem to cover a very broad range of what you ask it to play, sometimes even repeating songs by an artist / on an album, as shown below.

My results and Playlist are below should anybody be interested

yeah the shuffle option is REALLY bad

imapvplegend

The shuffle is still horribly broken. You only shuffle portions of the playlist. If I try to shuffle an artist I only hear stuff from their most recent 4 or 5 albums, instead of the entire discography. Shuffling a playlist only shuffles a portion.

Seriously, this problem is embarassingly easy to fix and I just can't believe it has gone on this long being broken.

Hello Spotify!  Currently there is no pseudo-randomness implemented, so, so when songs are played in random mode, they will always follow the same randomness, small change, that could be done in a simple way and bring more variety when listening to playlists. (To test, play in a playlist, turn random mode on, forward one song, go back to the previous song, and go to the next song again, it will be the same one you played previously).

**Original Text**

Still isn't fixed and now songs by the same artist keep repeating, I have to sort by song name to get a "better" shuffle

sulaimanalishah

This is not an issue I’m having with my account this is an issue with the way Music is shuffled for people that don’t have premium accounts. One example is that I went to play an album by Guns n Roses, it played 5 of the least popular songs and then an Iron Maiden song, that’s not what I asked for?!?! It happens regularly with other albums too, if needs to be sorted as I’ve started to use other, better apps such as Musi.

Just weighing in and agreeing that this issue is NOT resolved. My playlists are all genre based and include 30 to 120 songs each. Even in smaller playlists, if I don't listen to the entire list at once, there are songs I rarely hear. Regardless of the playlist or where I start playing, the same songs are frequented and played first noticeably more than others.

Implement a true random shuffle that removes songs from the draw after they have been played. The "shuffle play" button should initiate a new shuffle, then switch to a "continue shuffle" button with the option to "reset shuffle"

Aryason

I know that there is a shuffle mode on spotify but it isn't random. I also know a lot of people prefer their music to play similar songs together and that's why the shuffle isn't random, but if you added a setting to turn on a completely random mode for shuffle, it would make people like me happy who enjoy listening to all sorts of genres of music together.
