Implement an actual shuffle function

Yes, you read that right.  The "shuffle" function in Spotify is nothing more than a randomizer.  There's a difference?  YES.

RANDOM - Play one song.  The next song can be ANY song in your playlist.  Including the one you just listened to.  Though I've never had this specifically happen, I literally just heard the same song that I heard 2 songs ago.  This is how Spotify's "shuffle" currently functions.

SHUFFLE - Take your entire list, shuffle them (like cards), and play the first song in the shuffle.  Once finished, move that song off the pile.  Once the pile is depleted, shuffle the deck again and start over (maybe pop a message up).

I know enough about programming (not much) to know that shuffling is probably a bit harder than random, but come on.  I may be in the minority, but I don't have a lot of little playlists.  I have one list with nearly a thousand songs in it, because I like all the music, and am rarely not in the mood for one of those songs.  But what I can't stand is hearing the same song over and over again.  I think there may even be songs in my list I haven't heard yet, while I've heard others 4-5 times.

I know it may not matter much, but I would probably lay down the money for at least a year subscription if this feature was implemented.

EDIT: Another user pointed out that I can see what all is queued up in my shuffle by clicking the Play Queue link, and that Spotify supposedly sets up a rolling shuffle of 50 songs.  It would be nice if this range could be expanded to say 50-100% of your playlist.

EDIT 4/6/12: I just dealt with the same song 16 tracks later.  The song played the first time yesterday afternoon.  I went home, listened for a bit on my home PC (just a few songs), then started listening again this morning.  If the list recycles itself after a day, or if you log in from another computer, I see that as an area for improvement.

Updated: 2016-02-05

Hey folks, we have made some improvements to our shuffle algorithm that we are turning on as a default for all users. We'd love your feedback on how your shuffle experience changes after today (Feb 5, 2016). Thanks for your feedback, your comments are essential to helping us improve Spotify.

Update Aug 2018:

Hi folks, it sounds like quite a few of you are experiencing only the top tracks in a playlist shuffling/ playing when using Connect. This has already been reported here.

We’ve given a transparent status there explaining there isn’t a current timeline for a fix. Please do leave a VOTE there if you’re experiencing the issue and a comment. We can then bring this information back internally to show the size of the issue for our users.

If however you are experiencing issues with Shuffle when not using Connect, please get back to us in this thread we've the questions we've listed and click +VOTE. Thank you!

Yeah shuffle is laughably bad in the past few days..... hit shuffle on my entire library of a few thousand songs and if for example I have them sorted by title, it only plays songs with titles that begin with a number or the letter A. In other words it only shuffles a handful of the songs and just ignores all the rest.... seriously?!

This shouldn't be marked as "implemented".

Every moderator removes new topics about shuffle and forwards people to that topic. However it's marked as "Implemented".

Your shuffle is a disaster, thus this topic should be unmarked as Implemented so it can gain votes again.

This topic should be unmarked as "Implemented" So i've made another "Idea" about unmarking this.

We should be able to give votes here again. This shuffle is a disaster.

spotifycares sent me here - lately shuffle has been worse than ever and its incredibly annoying. when i shuffle a playlist, that means i want an equal chance of hearing any of the songs in that playlist, not just the ones that spotify wants me to hear!! i like to put the albums im listening to at the moment into a playlist and shuffle them, but instead of shuffling the albums it will play like seven songs from one album in a row and i end up skipping tons of songs. i would be so much happier listening to music with spotify if they at least implemented an option to shuffle for real, even if its not the default. PLEASE SPOTIFY FIX THIS

I'm running into the same issue I've had for as long as I can remember:

If I have a playlist that had six songs from Album X and seven from Album Y and hit shuffle, Spotify will play a song from Album X, followed by a song from Album Y, followed by the other six songs from Album Y, followed by the remaining five songs from Album X. It might maintain an actual shuffle longer than that, say five songs, but then it will occasionally follow the above format, where it plays all of the songs from each album one at a time. If the playlist has songs from a dozen different albums it will still do the same thing, playing the tracks from each album before moving on to the next.

I can't tell you how often this happens, but I'd guess around a quarter of the time I shuffle a playlist.

Spotify Cares sent me here, which is kind of dumb as I can’t vote on this thread.  I wrote them, so they should’ve counted me amongst the p***ed-off by now Anyways, the shuffle has been royally freaked for the past week.  When I create a new playlist with multiple tracks from each artist I like, it’ll randomly select one artist and start playing only those tracks!  It’ll do the same thing on already-existing playlists.  When I add new tracks, it only plays from those tracks by selecting the artist at random and only playing that artist’s tracks. Now, I am not sure if this is some “new and improved/smarter version” of the shuffle function, but I HATE HATE HATE IT!  There’s nothing improved about it.  I like things to be completely random like they were. I’ve been a premium subscriber for 5 years, and I’ve been through some crazy times with Spotify (even when Taylor Swift left, taking with her the one song of hers I like called “I Knew You Were Trouble”), but this past week’s been the ONLY time I’ve considered leaving that subscription.  However, it’s only been a week, and I’ll give Spotify a chance to fix it.  However, if this freaking godforsaken “new and improved smarter shuffle” twaddle isn’t reverted back by June 24th (a couple days before the subscription renews), I’m done.
