Implement an actual shuffle function

Yes, you read that right.  The "shuffle" function in Spotify is nothing more than a randomizer.  There's a difference?  YES.

RANDOM - Play one song.  The next song can be ANY song in your playlist.  Including the one you just listened to.  Though I've never had this specifically happen, I literally just heard the same song that I heard 2 songs ago.  This is how Spotify's "shuffle" currently functions.

SHUFFLE - Take your entire list, shuffle them (like cards), and play the first song in the shuffle.  Once finished, move that song off the pile.  Once the pile is depleted, shuffle the deck again and start over (maybe pop a message up).

I know enough about programming (not much) to know that shuffling is probably a bit harder than random, but come on.  I may be in the minority, but I don't have a lot of little playlists.  I have one list with nearly a thousand songs in it, because I like all the music, and am rarely not in the mood for one of those songs.  But what I can't stand is hearing the same song over and over again.  I think there may even be songs in my list I haven't heard yet, while I've heard others 4-5 times.

I know it may not matter much, but I would probably lay down the money for at least a year subscription if this feature was implemented.

EDIT: Another user pointed out that I can see what all is queued up in my shuffle by clicking the Play Queue link, and that Spotify supposedly sets up a rolling shuffle of 50 songs.  It would be nice if this range could be expanded to say 50-100% of your playlist.

EDIT 4/6/12: I just dealt with the same song 16 tracks later.  The song played the first time yesterday afternoon.  I went home, listened for a bit on my home PC (just a few songs), then started listening again this morning.  If the list recycles itself after a day, or if you log in from another computer, I see that as an area for improvement.

Updated: 2016-02-05

Hey folks, we have made some improvements to our shuffle algorithm that we are turning on as a default for all users. We'd love your feedback on how your shuffle experience changes after today (Feb 5, 2016). Thanks for your feedback, your comments are essential to helping us improve Spotify.

Update Aug 2018:

Hi folks, it sounds like quite a few of you are experiencing only the top tracks in a playlist shuffling/ playing when using Connect. This has already been reported here.

We’ve given a transparent status there explaining there isn’t a current timeline for a fix. Please do leave a VOTE there if you’re experiencing the issue and a comment. We can then bring this information back internally to show the size of the issue for our users.

If however you are experiencing issues with Shuffle when not using Connect, please get back to us in this thread we've the questions we've listed and click +VOTE. Thank you!

Absolutely digusting that Spotify have still not acknowledged, let alone begun to address, this issue. I'm a premium user and I dont think its unreasonable to expect a working shuffle function for ~£10 a month!

@Tobraham Just tried to create a playlist with the 16 hour function, based on taking tracks from a current playlist I have called "Current Mix" - and when it creates, it contains no tracks? Just says the playlist is currently empty, any ideas please?

Can you give me the link to the original 'Current Mix' playlist you used to build from? Did you try a second time?

I have noticed a browser issue where Chrome sometimes 'times out' waiting for a page to load and that somehow interferes with list building.

I was using Chrome, tried 2 or 3 times - will try in a different browser and let you know

Hi @Tobraham. Tried again using Internet Explorer and receive the following error:

New Playlist Created...
Populating new playlist - please stand by, this may take a few minutes...
Starting song selection...

Could not select a song

Any ideas?

I think I found the problem. I had hard coded the script to look at my song list specifically while I was working and neglected to change it back. So when you were testing it, it was trying to select songs from my database (which didn't exist at the time) so it stopped on a song selection error.

Give it another shot!

I use spotify everyday and definitley noticed the loop of tracks it was 'shuffling'. Hopefully this update will make a difference, I have noticed a change. It was terrible on my phone, it would literally be a queue of 5 or 6 tracks then the same tracks in the same order over and over again.

@Tobraham - seems to be working now - thanks so much!

Yesterday (4/21/16) I complained that the shuffle feature doesn't do well, and SpotifyCares on Twitter sent me here. If the updates happened in February, well, I don't see any improvement. I shuffle a >3500 word playlist every day, and every day somehow I hear the same songs. I honestly don't know how this happens, but it consistently happens and it bugs me a lot!!

Ok...SPOTIFY, this post was started 4YEARS AGO!!! Can you fix this already? Also, there is no shuffle option for my "Liked From Radio" list in the Radio tab but it is there under my playlist tab. It really sucks that all the songs are in the exact same order every time and the list starts from the beginning everytime. I may have clicked the like button on alot of rock songs one day, and all reggae songs the next, but that doesn't mean that I want to hear all rock songs and then all reggae songs in my playlist. I want to hear a mix of everything....its called VARIETY.

ALSO, why does my "Liked From Radio" in the Radio tab have mostly songs that I never liked and never will when "Liked From Radio" in the playlist tab is exactly songs that I actually liked?

PANDORA figured shuffling out back when they launched. IPODS can do this with ease from the very first gen 1. Remind me why I'm paying for Spotify Premium again if I'm getting sub-standard list filtering?

The thing I liked about PANDORA is that it picked songs that were musically similar to ones that I liked and delivered new songs to me using that criteria. SPOTIFY does not and is limited to a genre or album or artist and cannot give me musically similar songs. I left PANDORA because I was turned off by the limited music and endless repeats. Spotify is losing my interest.
