Implement an actual shuffle function

Yes, you read that right.  The "shuffle" function in Spotify is nothing more than a randomizer.  There's a difference?  YES.

RANDOM - Play one song.  The next song can be ANY song in your playlist.  Including the one you just listened to.  Though I've never had this specifically happen, I literally just heard the same song that I heard 2 songs ago.  This is how Spotify's "shuffle" currently functions.

SHUFFLE - Take your entire list, shuffle them (like cards), and play the first song in the shuffle.  Once finished, move that song off the pile.  Once the pile is depleted, shuffle the deck again and start over (maybe pop a message up).

I know enough about programming (not much) to know that shuffling is probably a bit harder than random, but come on.  I may be in the minority, but I don't have a lot of little playlists.  I have one list with nearly a thousand songs in it, because I like all the music, and am rarely not in the mood for one of those songs.  But what I can't stand is hearing the same song over and over again.  I think there may even be songs in my list I haven't heard yet, while I've heard others 4-5 times.

I know it may not matter much, but I would probably lay down the money for at least a year subscription if this feature was implemented.

EDIT: Another user pointed out that I can see what all is queued up in my shuffle by clicking the Play Queue link, and that Spotify supposedly sets up a rolling shuffle of 50 songs.  It would be nice if this range could be expanded to say 50-100% of your playlist.

EDIT 4/6/12: I just dealt with the same song 16 tracks later.  The song played the first time yesterday afternoon.  I went home, listened for a bit on my home PC (just a few songs), then started listening again this morning.  If the list recycles itself after a day, or if you log in from another computer, I see that as an area for improvement.

Updated: 2016-02-05

Hey folks, we have made some improvements to our shuffle algorithm that we are turning on as a default for all users. We'd love your feedback on how your shuffle experience changes after today (Feb 5, 2016). Thanks for your feedback, your comments are essential to helping us improve Spotify.

Update Aug 2018:

Hi folks, it sounds like quite a few of you are experiencing only the top tracks in a playlist shuffling/ playing when using Connect. This has already been reported here.

We’ve given a transparent status there explaining there isn’t a current timeline for a fix. Please do leave a VOTE there if you’re experiencing the issue and a comment. We can then bring this information back internally to show the size of the issue for our users.

If however you are experiencing issues with Shuffle when not using Connect, please get back to us in this thread we've the questions we've listed and click +VOTE. Thank you!

Hi

This is really more of a bug than a suggestion but it is something that you really need to fix.

I was listening to a playlist that is roughly 3 hours long on shuffle and noticed that after about an hour the same songs started to replay over (in exactly the same order as before). This is really quite irritating.

I have also noticed that if I have a really long playlist (maybe a few hundred songs) then the shuffle functionality will only ever randomly pick songs from a subset of the list. There are whole albums on the playlist that always get ignored.

Please can you fix this so that the shuffle feature is more robust and will select songs from my whole playlist?

Thanks

Sevenface

I don't noticed that there is any difference since the Start fo 2016. Would be better if we could get a "Random" Button and a "Shuffle" Button.

Please make the shuffle option more randomized. Why does it always play the same things?! I have 800 songs on my playlist and most never appear on the queue when i press shuffle. And then i get to the end it repeats itself when it didnt even play 90% of what was on that playlist. I tested it out by making a new playlist and added 10 albums by 10 different artists and no matter how many times i tried to reshuffle, one of the bands rarely, if ever, even got on the list. When you press shiffle it shouldnt just grab SOME of the songs off a playlist and shuffle them up, it should take ALL the songs on that playlist and play them in a random order. Its not rocket science i dont understand how this function is so poorly designed. I deserve better for my monthly payment. PLEASE IMPROVE THE SHUFFLE FUNCTION!!!!

I'm going to cancel my subscription if this doesn't get fixed soon. This is a deal breaking flaw in the app. But the fact that all these complaints from so many people have just fell on deaf ears for so many years makes me think they're never going to fix it. What's the point in having this community function if they don't even listen to the community?

I was listening to a Spotify made playlist today. All day long same playlist.
Guess what?
At least 10 of the 45 songs in it played more than 3 times.
Why the he'll won't you do something about it?
And seriously, 45 pages of comments and no mod or Dev comments ?
WHERE ARE YOU GUYS?!

I am pleased that I am not the only one to have this issue with spotify. I have noticed it over the past couple months since I am a new member, but it appears this has been an ongoing issue for the past four years. The fact that it is not fixed yet is appauling. Looks like I will be canceling my membership as well and going back to Pandora One!

Still wanting an actual shuffle function. I hear about the same 200 songs out of the 2000+ that I have saved.

Biggest flaw in Spotify IMO.

So here we are 4 years later, and Spotify's "shuffle" feature is still pure garbage. Any thoughts on when or if this might be fixed? As of now, shuffle is virtually useless. I listen to music while riding my bike or running, making switching songs a bit of a pain. I hate to shuffle a playlist, hear one song, then another, then the first again. It's happened to me many times and it seems like such an easy fix.

How the f*** is this not fixed???????? Years and years and pages and pages of comments, and NOTHING? How hard can it be to fix this? The algorithm should default to playing songs that have NOT been played recently, and definitely NOT already played during the current listening session. Get your sh*t together please.

Shuffle play is still trash even after years of complaining about it. I keep hearing the same songs over and over!!
