Implement an actual shuffle function

Yes, you read that right.  The "shuffle" function in Spotify is nothing more than a randomizer.  There's a difference?  YES.

RANDOM - Play one song.  The next song can be ANY song in your playlist.  Including the one you just listened to.  Though I've never had this specifically happen, I literally just heard the same song that I heard 2 songs ago.  This is how Spotify's "shuffle" currently functions.

SHUFFLE - Take your entire list, shuffle them (like cards), and play the first song in the shuffle.  Once finished, move that song off the pile.  Once the pile is depleted, shuffle the deck again and start over (maybe pop a message up).

I know enough about programming (not much) to know that shuffling is probably a bit harder than random, but come on.  I may be in the minority, but I don't have a lot of little playlists.  I have one list with nearly a thousand songs in it, because I like all the music, and am rarely not in the mood for one of those songs.  But what I can't stand is hearing the same song over and over again.  I think there may even be songs in my list I haven't heard yet, while I've heard others 4-5 times.

I know it may not matter much, but I would probably lay down the money for at least a year subscription if this feature was implemented.

EDIT: Another user pointed out that I can see what all is queued up in my shuffle by clicking the Play Queue link, and that Spotify supposedly sets up a rolling shuffle of 50 songs.  It would be nice if this range could be expanded to say 50-100% of your playlist.

EDIT 4/6/12: I just dealt with the same song 16 tracks later.  The song played the first time yesterday afternoon.  I went home, listened for a bit on my home PC (just a few songs), then started listening again this morning.  If the list recycles itself after a day, or if you log in from another computer, I see that as an area for improvement.

Hey folks, we have made some improvements to our shuffle algorithm that we are turning on as a default for all users. We'd love your feedback on how your shuffle experience changes after today (Feb 5, 2016). Thanks for your feedback, your comments are essential to helping us improve Spotify.

Update Aug 2018:

Hi folks, it sounds like quite a few of you are experiencing only the top tracks in a playlist shuffling/ playing when using Connect. This has already been reported here.

We’ve given a transparent status there explaining there isn’t a current timeline for a fix. Please do leave a VOTE there if you’re experiencing the issue and a comment. We can then bring this information back internally to show the size of the issue for our users.

If however you are experiencing issues with Shuffle when not using Connect, please get back to us in this thread we've the questions we've listed and click +VOTE. Thank you!

... Starting to hate songs I like because I hear a set of them at least 3 times within 40 mins.

Oh how much I do sympathize!

So my buddies showed me how to ActuallyShuffle my WholeMusicLibrary outside Spotify-- so that I never get a repeat-- >> as you can see at this link-- << until every single track in my over 70,000 track WholeMusicLibrary has played-- unless I insert a RequestedRepeat to my PlayQueue.

You can do the required "programming fix" youself-- It is quite easy actually.

I agree. I'm really discouraged. I use multiple services always looking for
bettering my listening entertainment and still torn between AOL, Spotify,
Iheart, among others. eventually I will be happy with 1 of them to
supplement my XM which I love, but still like the idea of having 1 more
service. I'm not real happy with any of the shuffle services, still looking
for 1 that works right.

Pease type your reply above this line -##

My shuffle completely ignores music that has recently been added to the list.

If I look in my shuffle queue there's literally not a single song to be seen that is on the first page of recently added songs.

I actually find this unacceptable for a service I pay €10,- a month for...

sorry rant over

How hos this not be fixed yet?  This is a huge design flaw and obviously I'm not the only person who things so.  I love Spotify, but HATE when this happens.

Good evening,
Playing in Random (Shuffle): When the random mode is turned on, observe that played songs end up being those that more I hear, which ends automatically disregarding some tracks would also like them to be reproduced, but even if I'm wrong about this, I think it would be very handy tool shuffle the playlist, a button that the user could trigger as many times as wanted, to change the order of tracks to find a sequence that satisfies you. Also related to this, it would be nice if it were possible for the user himself to alter the order of tracks in playlists maunally.

THANK YOU

This is not implemented, Shuffle not work, continue to play track already listened

Seems at 21/07/2016 Spoty for Windows version 1.0.33.106.g60b5d1f0 reproduce many times also track already played if Shuffle is active.

This is bad.

Shuffle function must remeber the listened track and reproduce only a new track, when tracks are ended music should stop if there are no loop option active.

The idea is ASK to the Spotify to check better and implement a better Shuffle. Seems If I start play track of an Artist Same track are reproduced. I listen for more than an hours and same track are played. Music has not stopped.

Seems web version work better. Please fix the Windows app to play just only once track and when an full Album or Playlist or Artist has been played with Shuffle music should stop.

Totally agreed - it's so **bleep**.

Are spotify fixing this?  I love the variety on spotify but given I'm paying for a "premium" membership and this feature is so annoying, I'm looking at other suppliers.  Shuffle is shuffle.  Put a "favourite" feature on the song like in ITunes if you want to see it more often.  So frustrating when I put a play list on to enjoy and just end up skipping the songs as I've heard them 85,000 times already.

I agree totally, this issue is not fixed. Shuffle not work well and transform the music experience in a stressfull experience because same track are played.
