Implement an actual shuffle function

Yes, you read that right.  The "shuffle" function in Spotify is nothing more than a randomizer.  There's a difference?  YES.

RANDOM - Play one song.  The next song can be ANY song in your playlist.  Including the one you just listened to.  Though I've never had this specifically happen, I literally just heard the same song that I heard 2 songs ago.  This is how Spotify's "shuffle" currently functions.

SHUFFLE - Take your entire list, shuffle them (like cards), and play the first song in the shuffle.  Once finished, move that song off the pile.  Once the pile is depleted, shuffle the deck again and start over (maybe pop a message up).

I know enough about programming (not much) to know that shuffling is probably a bit harder than random, but come on.  I may be in the minority, but I don't have a lot of little playlists.  I have one list with nearly a thousand songs in it, because I like all the music, and am rarely not in the mood for one of those songs.  But what I can't stand is hearing the same song over and over again.  I think there may even be songs in my list I haven't heard yet, while I've heard others 4-5 times.

I know it may not matter much, but I would probably lay down the money for at least a year subscription if this feature was implemented.

EDIT: Another user pointed out that I can see what all is queued up in my shuffle by clicking the Play Queue link, and that Spotify supposedly sets up a rolling shuffle of 50 songs.  It would be nice if this range could be expanded to say 50-100% of your playlist.

EDIT 4/6/12: I just dealt with the same song 16 tracks later.  The song played the first time yesterday afternoon.  I went home, listened for a bit on my home PC (just a few songs), then started listening again this morning.  If the list recycles itself after a day, or if you log in from another computer, I see that as an area for improvement.

Updated: 2016-02-05

Hey folks, we have made some improvements to our shuffle algorithm that we are turning on as a default for all users. We'd love your feedback on how your shuffle experience changes after today (Feb 5, 2016). Thanks for your feedback, your comments are essential to helping us improve Spotify.

Update Aug 2018:

Hi folks, it sounds like quite a few of you are experiencing only the top tracks in a playlist shuffling/ playing when using Connect. This has already been reported here.

We’ve given a transparent status there explaining there isn’t a current timeline for a fix. Please do leave a VOTE there if you’re experiencing the issue and a comment. We can then bring this information back internally to show the size of the issue for our users.

If however you are experiencing issues with Shuffle when not using Connect, please get back to us in this thread we've the questions we've listed and click +VOTE. Thank you!

Mine doesn't start from the top if shuffle has been activated before starting the playlist. Just tested this on the desktop version.

It doesn't do anything, proof: https://gfycat.com/SoftDamagedAstrangiacoral

Ok, here is my contribution to how awful the shuffle is on Andriod 7.2.0.1250 as of 1-2-2017.

Playlist info: 542 total songs, 30 artists with 10+ songs .. in the images below of my 'Play shuffle' button... 26 songs (shown below), 14 total artists in the list, 5 artists with 2+ songs with 1 of those having 5 songs of the 25.

Seconded! I have a playlist with almost 900 songs and when I use the shuffle function, I get the same songs over and over; there are some songs shuffle never even touches (or I don't give it long enough to play through songs to get to the newer adds??). It would be nice if the algorithm (or whatever is used?) could jumble the mix up differently! I know there's no way to have a truly random shuffle, but please! It seems to pick the songs I don't listen to often, maybe? Because often times it picks songs I don't care to hear at the moment, and I've actually been trying to remove those songs when I remember to log on the desktop, haha. I should say I only know I have this issue on mobile. Desktop, I don't know.

Shuffle feature is still dog **bleep**. I added about 40 songs to my playlist (it's only 60 big) and it always plays the first 20 when I click shuffle! Please sort this Spotify. I moved from Apple Music because their discovery feature was rubbish but if I can't even listen to my music, I might have to sadly move back!

why is this set to "Implemented"? Shuffle still doesn't work. When mobile apps sort your song library by "Last Added" they ignore all artists and songs except for the top 200-300. Sorting by "Title" seems to fix the issue and allow all songs to sort. However, since Last Added is the default sort most people will never find this.

TRULY RANDOMIZED SORTING IS NOT HARD, IT'S WHAT YOU HAVE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS DO TO PRACTICE WORKING WITH ARRAYS

please fix this, it's been YEARS, how can you not fix this

this should be obvious.

It seems Sootify shuffle has several issues spanning multiple devices and operating systems. One common denominator seems to be we are all listening to our own playlist. I created a new 2nd account under a different email address, and so far if I listen to my playlist from the 2nd account, I'm not experiencing the repeating song issues. I've only been trying this for a week, but so far the mix has been much better using this approach.  YMMV.

The shuffle function that was supposedly fixed last February does not work properly. There has been a lot of activity on this "Implemented" thread:

Please refer there for details on the issue.

I've started a new thread for this. Suggest everybody post there to get some attention.
