Implement an actual shuffle function

Yes, you read that right.  The "shuffle" function in Spotify is nothing more than a randomizer.  There's a difference?  YES.

RANDOM - Play one song.  The next song can be ANY song in your playlist.  Including the one you just listened to.  Though I've never had this specifically happen, I literally just heard the same song that I heard 2 songs ago.  This is how Spotify's "shuffle" currently functions.

SHUFFLE - Take your entire list, shuffle them (like cards), and play the first song in the shuffle.  Once finished, move that song off the pile.  Once the pile is depleted, shuffle the deck again and start over (maybe pop a message up).

I know enough about programming (not much) to know that shuffling is probably a bit harder than random, but come on.  I may be in the minority, but I don't have a lot of little playlists.  I have one list with nearly a thousand songs in it, because I like all the music, and am rarely not in the mood for one of those songs.  But what I can't stand is hearing the same song over and over again.  I think there may even be songs in my list I haven't heard yet, while I've heard others 4-5 times.

I know it may not matter much, but I would probably lay down the money for at least a year subscription if this feature was implemented.

EDIT: Another user pointed out that I can see what all is queued up in my shuffle by clicking the Play Queue link, and that Spotify supposedly sets up a rolling shuffle of 50 songs.  It would be nice if this range could be expanded to say 50-100% of your playlist.

EDIT 4/6/12: I just dealt with the same song 16 tracks later.  The song played the first time yesterday afternoon.  I went home, listened for a bit on my home PC (just a few songs), then started listening again this morning.  If the list recycles itself after a day, or if you log in from another computer, I see that as an area for improvement.

Hey everyone,

We wanted to add some more context to the changes that have taken place in case anyone stumbles upon this idea. We've introduced the Fewer Repeats shuffling option, which takes your recent listening history into account and can be found in Settings - Playback - Shuffle mode. Check out this For the Record post for more info.

Once again, thanks for helping us make Spotify better, by participating here on the Community!

Bring back the ability to shuffle all the playlist you have in a folder, I'm using shuffle because I don't have a particular/genre I want to listen to.

Please, is quite tireson to lisent the same songs everyday, I have a lot of playlist with more than +100 songs, but I only lisent the same 30, even so, that I now wich song is coming next. I'm following one playlist with more than 1,200 songs, almos 4 months of music, but I've lisent just 50 in more than one week.

Winamp was free, and it had a optión when you could decide how many song should the shuffle setting jump linealy, so you could here the listed song like 3-3 or 12-12, so it was like son:1-3-6-9-11-15-18... and with the optión of reapite, it came back to the first ones so it could go like 99-2-5-8...etc...

I'm about to drop spotify, is just anoying.

I have just cancel my premium account until there is an actual shuffle function, I keep hearing the same 30 tracks out of 1000+

This is NOT implemented. I shuffled my entire "songs" library, which is a couple of thousand songs, and the ONLY tracks I hear is tope 50 of the playlist. If I choose to sort it by artist, I only hear artist that start with "A". ONLY!

If I sort by track, I only hear tracks that start with symbols or with "A".

I want my entire list shuffled. I used to be able to do this, but apparently no longer. Windows 10 Spotify version 1.0.49.125

I've just noticed that on mobile (Android) the shuffle works as it should. When I shuffle my entire library, it actually shuffles the entire library.

                                                 Data summary

Spoiler
First, this forum is broken and unusable for discussion-- but at least sometimes, we can place a Bookmark to note useful data for discussion elsewhere in a safe place-- and hopefully the authorized juvenile delinquents will not further vandalize our Bookmarks and our work on this serious problem-- the serious problem being-- "Users have to construct their own working Spotify Shuffle function".

My friends showed me how to play through each and every track of any 60,000 track collection in my "Your Music" without even one single repeat.

Thank you, @Marcelus85 and @Hale-Bopp!

So, to summarize--

* Sometimes the Spotify Shuffle works as it should for playlists less than 50 tracks.

* But the Spotify Shuffle always fails for any playlist greater than 5000 tracks, such as at >> this link <<  by never playing more than 500 tracks without going into endless loops of unrequested replays.

Does that accurately summarize the empirical data on what the current so-called "solved" and "implemented" Spotify Shuffle always does?

I've noticed that shuffle gives priority to lesser played songs and I think this is terrible. I've been listening to a ton of Patti Smith recently getting fired up for a show of hers (it was amazing, btw). I made a playlist that had 120 Patti Smith songs and 71 Avatar songs to listen to on a long drive. I put it on shuffle and didn't hear a single Patti Smith song in 4 hours of driving. If I wanted to listen to only Avatar, I would've only put Avatar in the playlist!! I've noticed the same thing with Babymetal, who I listen to all the time and have in many of my playlists. When I shuffle one of these playlists, no Babymetal songs play until the playlist is reaching the end, then it is nothing but Babymetal. I would like the ability to shuffle a playlist in which each song is played in a completely random order with no song prioritized in any way, and it continues that way until each song in the playlist has been played once.

Hello! Can U please fix the problem about shuffle in mobile app (android).

It´s always plays only a couple song from artist, not all.

In desktop version there is no similary problem at all.

Jaahas123

If you listen with pc and change song in phone shuffle will broke, playing same songs again and again.

Yes, @aikoss00, @Hale-Bopp, @Marcelus85, and the others whose important data on this high-priority problem "disappeared" since Wednesday 2017_03_08.

Thank you-- Your empirical data have importance.

We want to hear every track of our Spotify collection without even a single repeat until every track has played, thank you.
