[Mobile] [Other] Smart Shuffle toggle setting in settings menu

Smart shuffle is a fun way to discover new songs, but it comes at a cost. Want to reshuffle your queue? Bam, wait a few seconds longer. Want to unshuffle your playlist? Bam, no longer works, and goes to a completely random place in the playlist.

To me this is an unwanted complication, and I'd much rather be able to choose in the settings menu whether I want to enable the Smart Shuffle feature, or disable it.

Updated on 2025-04-29

Hey folks,

We're excited to announce that you can now toggle whether Smart Shuffle is available on your mobile apps!

  1. Tap your profile picture at the top.
  2. Tap Settings and privacy.
  3. Select Playback.

Cheers & many thanks for your input 🙂 Stay tuned for new updates 🙌🏼

Let us disable smart shuffle or toggle it off permanently in settings.

Smart shuffle is, from all of the people I've spoken to, and all the forums I've read, across many many websites, the most unanimously hated feature in Spotify, I don't think I know anyone who likes it, and if anyone does, I seriously question their ability to formulate rational thoughts.

Allow us to permanently disable smart shuffle soon or I am switching to another service. Right now the ONLY thing that keeps me with Spotify is that I really can't be bothered to transfer my 4k track library somewhere else, so, I'll admit, you've got me there, but every day that passes and I have to click the shuffle button a random amount of times, slowly makes me feel more ready to sit there and switch my library somewhere else.

In the past year I have found Spotify to be getting worse and worse, The mobile app feels like you had a team of pre-schoolers code it, Every track is downloaded on my phone because I am often without internet, why is it that it takes sometimes a minute or more to play a downloaded track? I have a flagship phone with the latest OS. You guys really need to get your act together. I'm honestly Annoyed with myself for cheaping out and buying a spotify subscription, at least the artists would have gotten paid properly if i had bought the cds..

i got out an actual stopwatch and timed how long it took for smart shuffle to load so that i could toggle it off and it took a full 2 mins of sitting quietly staring at my phone. 2 mins doesn't sound long, but it was supposed to take 1second, not 120. i will NEVER use smart shuffle, but since you removed the reshuffle button in order to chokehold free users into paying, while not caring about the paid user experience, i think i deserve LITERALLY ANY WAY TO RESHUFFLE WHILE LISTENING

Please, for the love of all this is holy, add a toggle switch to disable Smart Shuffle.

Also, I'd like to see how many actually enjoy it. I doubt many at all.

Hey everyone, we only need about 200 votes to be the #1 community idea since before covid in terms of raw number of votes. Please tell ALL your friends and family and have them create accounts here if they've ever used Spotify in any way at all so they can vote for this idea! Hopefully we can also push this to 100 pages of comments by the time we're done. Until then, I'll be enjoying Apple and Amazon Music - fully ready to come back to Spotify THE EXACT MOMENT they fix this!

Same here, stopped Spotify only because of this! Listening to other services as well and convinced more to do the same. Seems Spotify simply doesn’t care about paying customers. Sad story: a friend had a playlist of artists of a festival and Spotify is so smart to add artists not playing there. That made him cancel and change to Tidal…

I'd like to congratulate Spotify on this great new feature. It's so annoying, that I'm going to try Deezer! Thanks guys!

Disabling smart shuffle does not remove the added songs from the queue half the time. Switching playlists re-enables smart shuffle. It's freaking impossible to get rid of this forced feature that, afaik, nobody actually likes. I'm a software developer myself and hate complaining about things this way (I know how hard developers work), but holy s**t, this feature doesn't work functionally AND it doesn't work technically, so here we are.

Really annoying feature! I switch a lot in between shuffle on and off. Now I need to doublecheck**bleep**..

Am pretty sure this feature is implemented not for us users to have a benefit but for the company to collect more data about our listening behaviour. and also to make us listen to more songs. I PAY for this program to NOT have ads! A feature that suggests other music as a basic implementation one cant disable and which is active in EVERY playlist is an advertisement tool, nothing else. Can we at one point just stick to a setup that works? can we stop forcing growth eveywhere?

I checked how long this topic is up already without any change as a result. really disappointing!

It's not about listening data, they have a program where you can agree to have your music forced on users through this program in exchange for payment. Additionally, if you agree to have your royalties reduced (basically agreeing to half a peanut, instead of a whole peanut) you can also enter the program to have your music forced on listeners that don't want it. It's all about increasing profitibililty. The issue for me before I left Spotify, is that the algorithm is so bad, that the **bleep** they were adding to my playlist when smart shuffle would enable itself, wasn't even close in terms of genre or anything I had ever listened to.

Channeling Dave Chappelle in his photocopy store skit:

Why can't users disable "smart" shuffle?

Because ____ em, that's why!

Good job making your service less useful!
