Smart shuffle is a fun way to discover new songs, but it comes at a cost. Want to reshuffle your queue? Bam, wait a few seconds longer. Want to unshuffle your playlist? Bam, no longer works, and goes to a completely random place in the playlist.

To me this is an unwanted complication, and I'd much rather be able to choose in the settings menu whether I want to enable the Smart Shuffle feature, or disable it.

Hey folks,

We're excited to announce that you can now toggle whether Smart Shuffle is available on your mobile apps!

1. Tap your profile picture at the top.
2. Tap Settings and privacy.
3. Select Playback.
4. Switch Enable all play modes off and you're good to go!

Finally, the worst feature in Spotify's history became possible to turn off as a persistent setting. Unfortunately this is only available for premium subscribers, which means I'll continue using the web version as a PWA on my phone. But I'm really happy for the people who will finally be able to turn this nightmare off for good within the app!

This being a premium only feature highlights my suspicion that this feature was made annoying on purpose to bully free users to move to premium. Premium always had the option to switch (although it was still a pain), while free users only had Smart Shuffle. If it were a feature they legitimately thought was good, they would have put Smart Shuffle behind the pay wall...

Enigma, instead of using the dedicated desktop app, use the web app in PWA mode. I do that for many apps that have a web version, like WhatsApp and Discord. WhatsApp in my opinion even works better in the web app. The web version of Spotify only has the shuffle that is a shuffle. As a side effect, Spotify will run under your browser's tracker and ad blocker extension, which is always a good idea anyway, even if you pay for premium.

Absolutely wonderful news, thanks for finally allowing us to toggle it on or off. Pervsersely, I am WAY more likely to use it on mobile now that I can opt out. I am so, so, so happy it's no longer bound to the same tap on mobile. I noticed on desktop it now drops down in a window too, which is also better.

A little respect for your long-term paying customers goes a long way. No point in complaining bitterly then not actually aooreciating if you do change it. Cheers!

my life has been fundamentally improved at this news. Smart shuffle was the only thing standing between me and nirvana. with this fix, I now ascend.

While I'm glad that the voice of the people has finally been heeded and this obtuse feature can now be disabled, it is such a tone deaf move to make this Premium-only. I'd say this is a new low, but sadly for the capitalist hellscape we live in, this is just a new middle.

When it takes over two years of countless users repeatedly and persistently petitioning Spotify to change course, I have absolutely no hope that they would enable this feature for free users. When a company sees more opportunities to make money, almost nothing else matters.
