[Mobile] [Other] Smart Shuffle toggle setting in settings menu

Smart shuffle is a fun way to discover new songs, but it comes at a cost. Want to reshuffle your queue? Bam, wait a few seconds longer. Want to unshuffle your playlist? Bam, no longer works, and goes to a completely random place in the playlist.

To me this is an unwanted complication, and I'd much rather be able to choose in the settings menu whether I want to enable the Smart Shuffle feature, or disable it.

Updated on 2025-04-29

Hey folks,

We're excited to announce that you can now toggle whether Smart Shuffle is available on your mobile apps!

  1. Tap your profile picture at the top.
  2. Tap Settings and privacy.
  3. Select Playback.
  4. Switch Enable all play modes off and you're good to go!

Cheers & many thanks for your input 🙂 Stay tuned for new updates 🙌🏼

How is this not already resolved? If I wanted spotify to shove their suggestions into my playlists I'd specifically ask them to do so. The fact that I cannot simply start spotify and shuffle my playlist without toggling through their forced recommendations is absurd.

Please create a separate button or account setting for Smart Shuffle. Having to cycle through just to get to regular shuffle is extremely annoying and hits data, which can be a problem in certain locations or for some users.

Another way to implement this (if not already mentioned) would be to have a setting to have smart shuffle active only when connected to WiFi. I wouldn't want to waste my mobile data on songs I didn't even choose to listen to, while I have a huge playlist downloaded already!

Btw, the "feature" doesn't turn off at all on my phone. Even when the shuffle button shows "no shuffle", the suggestions still remain in the list and get played.

Stop the enshittification.  Just let users disable it.

It's really dangerous to turm off smart shuffle when i am driving. Just let user choose to use it or not.

Making the only signifier of this a barely distinguishable icon change to the well-known shuffle icon is really unhelpful. It took me 15 minutes to work out how to turn this off during which time it kept playing random songs that I didn’t want? I would prefer this to be a separate button, or a settings option. It’s only because I happened to recognise that the icon was slightly different and didn’t just put it down to some sort of visual refresh.

Can we please get the**bleep** shuffle off button? How its not resolved after so much time, votes and comments?

How come spotify**bleep** at listening to simple feedback

I would also like for there to be a main toggle in settings to permanently disable smart shuffle. The time delay in switching it on and off (when I'm really trying to seek toggle the normal shuffle within the playlist) can be frustrating. Moreover I find that smart shuffle regularly recommends a small pool of all-too-familiar songs that I wish to move on from, or don't match the genre or subjective vibe of the music I'm looking for.

It's not specific to Spotify, I just think AI still has a long way to go in creative curation in media, and at the moment feels a little uninspired in its recommendations across all media and apps.

That being said, DJ is an exception to the rule, I think the way it picks and chooses from different existing playlists is quite good, and I love to see more of that. I recognise that my own tastes, being that they evolve pretty regularly and eclectically, probably aren't so suited to smart shuffle or DJ.

It's been more than a year (and 68 pages) and it still isn't fixed. And now it's on desktop too...

Yet another thing Spotify is pushing down our throats. Just like the podcasts.

Clearly not interested in allowing us to just remove the stupid thing and go back to how it was so I am not going to use spotify anymore I will just listen elsewhere to my music
