Shuffle should not repeat a song until X% of the the rest of the playlist has been played

My starred playlist is 250+ tracks, yet when I shuffle play I hear some song all of the time and others never. Spotify should keep track of the play history across sessions. Once a song has been played, it won'tbe put back into the sample pool until half (or some other percentage) of the other songs are played.

Example: Playlist X has 100 songs. When on shuffle, as soon as song Y is played it is put "on hold" and won't be considered for play until at least 50 other songs have been played.

I get sick of hearing the same songs over and over and this is easily a fixable problem. I would also hope that this is a duplicate suggestion, but I didn't see anything.

Hey everyone! Recently we updated this idea: "Implement an actual shuffle function"

With this new algorithm you should see songs played in shuffle move to the bottom of the play queue between sessions. We'd like to collect feedback on this algorithm so if you have any comments please post them here. Thanks for your feedback everyone!

I totally agree. No matter what you read on this forum. Nothing ever changes. All you get is replies from other spotify users. My complaint has been posted by other people since 2014 and before. So apparently nothing gets done. Frustrating that they take our money every month but offer no customer service.

This has not only been my complaint, but everyones complaint since Spotify started the service, based on coming here as soon as I signed up to download the software. I don't see how it's even still an issue.

I work as software tester and sometimes I need a full day test, so I enjoy doing this listening some music on Spotify and this shuffler thing bothers me a lot ahahah like **bleep** someone reports on Jira please...

Whatever the so-called improvements that were implemented earlier this year are, they are not apparent to me. I've only been on Spotify since earlier this year and been a premium member since June but my playlists ALWAYS repeat the same few songs over and over. Yes they do sometimes surprise me with unheard tunes but I tend to use the skip button often just so I can hear other songs. One day I looked at one of my playlists to see if I mistakenly only put 20 or 30 songs on there but nope, there were 280 songs as I had thought. A huge percentage of them had never played or had maybe played once in the previous months. So what up Spotify? This is supposed to be a tech company? My old-school Samsung mp3 player and iPod Classic all shuffle playlists without repeats. They just stop when all songs have played. I even have a 6 CD player that I bought in 1990, (yes, 1990!) that shuffles through six discs without repeating any songs on any of those discs! Shuffle technology is not new and can hardly be difficult to program. I think I will be canceling my subscription just in time for the new year. This app and service is one of the lamest ever.

I am having the same problem - this is my first time on the forum.  I don't have a huge library and have not saved it as a playlist - I am just shuffling the "MyLibrary" songs and I keep getting the same ones over an over again.  There are songs I have never heard once, and some songs I have removed that keep getting played.  I am using the free service - forget about paying for premium based on the reviews I am seeing.  It would have been great.  I guess its take it or leave it...

Why do people keep subscribing to Spotify? They have made it so simple to cancel, it's the one thing they got right!

Guys...  Its about money and agreements they have with certain labels.  I'm sure labels won't give them the rights unless they favor x artists/albums/songs. They pay on a per-play basis,  so labels are just trying to keep the money coming in since no one buys albums anymore. It's incredibly annoying, but that's why 5 years later they won't fix it. Just randomize your playlist yourself and don't hit their **bleep**ty shuffle button.

so almost three years after the first post, this still is an issue to the point where i will probably stop my subscription.

The "shuffle" seems to flush its previously played list every time you re start the app, and for some reason the shuffle algorithum keeps picking the same random songs early on in the mix a lot.

Google music has the ability to see how often you have played a song too, I woudl be so interested to see that in Spotify, some songs will have been plaed a lot and i bet some never at all

Like everyone else here, I can't believe that years later this is still an issue. It's unreal! This is my one big beef with Spotify. I make playlists and I want to listen to them on shuffle so that I don't have to spend the time randomizing them myself. It's really annoying to have people over, be playing a great playlist on shuffle, and then have it repeat a song when you haven't even listened to 25% of the playlist. This cannot be a difficult fix! I'm very much reconsidering being a premium member. Why should I keep paying for a service when it doesn't work the way it should? Extremely frustrating!
