Shuffle should not repeat a song until X% of the the rest of the playlist has been played

My starred playlist is 250+ tracks, yet when I shuffle play I hear some song all of the time and others never. Spotify should keep track of the play history across sessions. Once a song has been played, it won'tbe put back into the sample pool until half (or some other percentage) of the other songs are played.

Example: Playlist X has 100 songs. When on shuffle, as soon as song Y is played it is put "on hold" and won't be considered for play until at least 50 other songs have been played.

I get sick of hearing the same songs over and over and this is easily a fixable problem. I would also hope that this is a duplicate suggestion, but I didn't see anything.

Hey everyone! Recently we updated this idea: "Implement an actual shuffle function"

With this new algorithm you should see songs played in shuffle move to the bottom of the play queue between sessions. We'd like to collect feedback on this algorithm so if you have any comments please post them here. Thanks for your feedback everyone!

Still not working as intended

Tyler13s

Its May of 2022 now and this "implemented" idea from 2014 still does not function properly.

Extremely embarrassing.

From screenshot... Shuffle is enabled and yet two songs are playing twice in a row. As shown by the following screenshot this playlist has >1800 songs and yet it decides to play two of them twice. What at terrible user experience.

I heard portrayal of shuffle not being very good. Well I finally had a few occasions to use it and it's horrible. I've heard many examples of iTunes shuffle being the best. I don't know how it is after version 10 as after version 10 iTunes doesn't exist, as they killed the user interface and then subsequently killed and re-imagined the original version with a worse Interface. What I do know is however the algorithm works it's scary!

@pirionic PAYOLA!!!!

They haven't listened and it's ridiculous! Been like this for so many years - Winamp without don't the greatest media player of all time has a play count. This could be easily implemented and any song that has been played should automatically be taken out of the playlist and not played until every other song has been played at least once! This is an absolute joke that this is still a thing!

Yep same here. It still doesn’t work. Spotify if you have this community here to ask for suggestions why aren’t you listening to them. When pretty much all of us want the specific change why not listen to your customers. I have quite a few playlists and I listen to a **bleep** ton of music. One playlist is only Taylor swift songs so I can listen to all of her songs except the handful I don’t care for as much. There are times when a certain song has played three times in a row. I even checked to see if the song had been added multiple times to double check. Nope. Please just resolve the issues we’re asking to be fixed

  • I am experiencing this problem in fact one song on my playlist keeps playing back to back and only a few are played until this particular song is played again.

I will let you know. I have nearly 20,000 songs in my liked playlist of all genres.  It is the playlist I play most frequently and I should really like to hear all the songs before the end of the year.  I listen one to twelve hours per day depending on the day of the week.

I should also like to see it shuffle genres and artists.  I don't like hearing the same styles all day.  I truly like almost everything.

That sounds like a dream.
The bridge too far.
The Holy Grail of shuffle playing and the spotify is way too weak to get
even close to that. Can you imagine? The True randomness that covers the
whole thing. Who could imagine solving such a problem in 2025?
