Bro has the audacity to say they'll go broke if they don't add the paywall, when there's hundreds and millions of **bleep**ing people using this platform.

We get it, you're not associated to Google, and y'all run this place independently. But it went successful no?
Oh please, saying as if you're gonna not make any money when probably a whole ass tsunami wave of people has bought your subscriptions, even before the paywall on the lyrics came.

What's with the 'monthly limits' anyways? Sounds like a pretty ass feature. Google even provides it without us needing to pay or see that 'Enjoy lyrics on Google Premium' **bleep**😂

Oh and by the way, saying and mocking us by 'wE waNt fReE sTufF' sounded like as if we wanted the subscriptions to completely dissipate out of Spotify. We're all talking about the paywall for the lyrics, it's just that.

We didn't mention anything about everything else, like the 'if you want no ads come buy our subscription!', cause that's common.. and also one way to attract people to get it, alongside the student discounts, etc.

Try to convince us better,

that is... if you even have an actual reasonable excuse as to why you added that from the start.
And as to all my lovely hard-to-hear peeps out there, you guys deserve better than this🖐

pinnyooooooo,

Thanks for the message.

So yeah, you're right- Spotify has lots of users- 602 million. 40% of those users are Premium. that 40% makes 87% of their revenue, and the free plan 13%, and accounts for 2% of their actual profits. And, for the record, last year was the first time they were able to make a profit because since they've been investing all of their capital back into the platform. They are currently on shaky ground with their shareholders because those folks are interested in earning back their investments.

You're also correct that Spotify is an independent provider, who only focuses on streaming. They don't have the resources to rely on like Apple, Amazon, or Google. Their business model is centered around a self-serving funnel, which relies on upgrades. They incentivize these upgrades by making their premium services more attractive to users.

There is no chance on earth Spotify is going to say, "Alright, we'll give you this lyric feature back since it's the only thing you want." If you look around the community, free plan users are asking for stuff on the premium plan constantly, and it will not end.

The variable here is that I also feel as though the people who are hard of hearing or face some other difficulty in using the service deserve to be treated fairly. I don't that was a good look, and hopefully there can be a remedy for it.

So, my sentiment remains the same. If you value something and can afford it, pay for it. If you can't, enjoy all the free stuff. And for those being impacted by this because of an impairment, I am on their side and think there should be recourse so they can also enjoy this wonderful service.

Peace and love please have a blessed day.

Why are they doing this it’s literally pointless😭

Every one likes free stuff. Including me.

We have to choose what we are willing to pay for and what it's worth to us. If I can't afford it or don't use it very much, I have to live without it or find a cheep substitute.

It just good business. The others survive on subscriptions, other products and, or advertising. We all have the choice to support our preferences. Or settle for the free alternatives.

Threats to find another music stream is always there, Including public radio with free loud annoying DJs and local advertising.

Good luck with that and enjoy. I'm  told old used CD's are reasonably priced. If you can find a store that sells them, I'm sure their not free and no lyrics.

Talk about flawed business logic. Setting a limit on lyrics and that too in the premium subscription is kinda ridiculous to be honest.

darthgoon

There is no limit on lyrics in a Premium account.

For those of you demanding free features which cost time and money to create and maintain, have you read how Spotify is struggling to stay afloat over the last couple years? Using terms like "money hungry" speak to how you know nothing about business or software development. And if you don't have a premium account, you don't value audio quality either. Spotify is not like your Spectrum or Verizon, which both routinely increase costs without providing increased value, just to appease stock holders and bonuses for executives. Spotify is trying to survive, so try helping them out.

@Crosscheck67 you haven't read the other replies here either. lyrics are an accessibility issue, and that "but the company!!!!" garbage is not going to fly here. spotify's 2023 Q4 total revenue was over $4 billion USD, while their operating loss was a mere $81 million. their profits are fine, and they are not "trying to survive". the fact that they're locking song lyrics and audiobooks behind a paywall is a moneygrab, pure and simple. they're getting greedy, and it's not going to make everyone sign up for premium. why in the **bleep** would i 1) spend $12/month when they don't even have lyrics for everything (about half of what i check on lyrics for have not had them), 2) i can get ad-free listening on desktop by having an adblocker, and 3) i could technically just tile a spotify tab with an azlyrics tab and get my side by side lyrics? yes, the lyrics are that simple to get, but the other point with this thread is that i SHOULDN'T HAVE TO. they're a basic resource available for free everywhere on the internet, and charging to be able to see them with the song i'm listening to would be like a store charging me money to use their bathroom.

Crosscheck67

@somnomania Operating loss, or cost? Those are very different things. I'm not being rhetorical, I'm sincerely asking if you have any metrics from their quarterly reports aside from total revenue and operating loss, as those two alone cannot account for good or bad financial standing. Every time I've read about Spotify, they are reporting losses. If that remains consistent, they'll eventually hit a brick wall. They are consistently losing money and cutting staff, so I'm not understanding how their profits are just fine. However if you can show that they are cutting staff and raising prices for the same reasons Spectrum and Verizon are, I'll jump right on board with you.

This is absolutely ridiculous. I am currently trying to find a new music app which doesn't just care about money. Spotify used to be so good, but the ads are WAY too many (i get 2 every 3 songs) and now the lyrics limit.
