I have an idea that could make Spotify’s Local Files feature much more useful.
Sometimes artists change their songs after release. They may replace the instrumental, update the mix, or upload a new version.
However, many listeners still prefer the original version they discovered.
The problem is that if Spotify adds the updated version to my queue, but I already have the older version saved in Local Files, I have to manually replace it every time:
- Open Local Files
- Find the song
- Add it to the queue
- Remove the streaming version
It works, but it breaks the listening experience.
My suggestion is to add an optional setting:
“Prefer Local Files over Streaming Versions”
When enabled, Spotify would check if a song in the queue has a matching file stored locally on the device.
If Spotify detects a match using metadata like:
- ISRC (if available)
- song title
- artist
- album
- duration
it would automatically play the local version instead of the streaming version.
A good example is xxxmanera — “Скажи мне кто ты”
The song’s instrumental has been changed multiple times after release. Some listeners may prefer the newest version, but others may prefer the original instrumental.
If I have the original version saved in Local Files, Spotify could automatically recognize it and play my version whenever this song appears in my queue or recommendations.
This would not affect Spotify’s algorithms. Playlists, Discover Weekly, Radio, Autoplay, and recommendations would continue working normally. Spotify would simply replace the streaming version with the user’s local copy when an exact match exists.
Why this would be useful:
- Users can keep listening to their favorite versions of songs.
- Local Files would feel like a real part of the Spotify library.
- No more manually replacing songs in the queue.
- Users get more control over their listening experience.
This feature should be optional and disabled by default, so only users who want it would enable it.
I think this would be a small but very meaningful improvement for people who care about specific versions of songs.
