Feature Suggestion: BPM Lock for Mix / Per-Playlist BPM Control
Summary
Add the ability to lock a target BPM (beats per minute) when listening to a playlist — either as an extension of the Mix feature or as a per-playlist setting that works alongside Mix.
How it would work
1. Optimal BPM detection
When BPM Lock is enabled on a playlist (or when Mix is turned on), Spotify analyzes the tracks and surfaces a suggested optimal BPM range based on the songs in the playlist.
2. BPM slider and input field
The user sees a slider showing that optimal range, and can either drag the slider to pick a target BPM, or type a value into an input field. If the typed value is above the optimal max, it snaps to the highest optimal BPM; if it's below the optimal min, it snaps to the lowest. This prevents pitch and tempo distortion from being pushed too far.
3. Lock indicator
When active, a small BPM icon with a lock appears on the now-playing screen so the user knows the feature is engaged.
4. Smart eligibility
The feature is only offered for playlists whose tracks fall within a reasonable BPM spread. For example:
- A drum and bass playlist (~170 BPM) — yes
- A house, deep house, or tech house playlist (~125–130 BPM) — yes
- A mixed pop playlist with songs ranging 80–160 BPM — no (too wide; feature is hidden or grayed out)
5. Scope
Ideally configurable per playlist, but fully compatible with the existing Mix feature so transitions still beat-match at the locked tempo.
