[Playlists] Sort by Release Date

It would be nice to be able to sort a playlist by the release date of the songs.

Updated on 2023-03-30

Hey everyone,

Thanks for coming to the Spotify Idea Exchange.

We've discussed this idea and while it is interesting, we aren't able to prioritize it and don't have any immediate plans to implement this. We will let you know if this changes in the future.

If we do have any new information to share, rest assured we'll check back in here with a new status.

More info on why your idea has been closed can be found here.

Let's change the conversation, reason why Spotify can't or won't add this?

Apart from a development point of view, I can't see a reason, they already have the data associated to the actual song.

It would be great if this group kept posting to keep this thread alive.

It is really stupid that this still isn't a thing. Foobar2000 has had this and much more for literal decades.

They don't care. It's never going to happen. This thread has been up for 6 years.

Please add this feature, would love to use a "column chooser" and add a Date Released as well as other items like Record Label.

This is a great idea, come on Spotify, people have been asking for years, it will make our playlisting so much easier.

It would be great to have the option of sorting playlists both chronologically and reverse chronologically, by song release date.

Some users would like to listen to their playlist from oldest to newest. I personally would like to experience my playlist as a journey back in time. As the playlist has hundreds of songs, it would be a large amount of work for me to order it manually.

Also, agree with another user that the associated year should be that of the original song's release, not the year the track was remastered (where applicable).

I see this is a requested feature since 2014, so it's been six years now. Isn't it possible for the Spotify team to add this feature to their To Do list and give us some idea of a release date?

Good idea, I hope they implement this.

To this date I was mainly focusing on the real time listen with friends feature but now I am looking into other ideas as well, and there is a ton, so they have a lot of work and I guess they can not do everything at once, but I wish they would work faster, or the management or looking at ideas internally would work better.

XzeroR3's idea is actually really good. Please just add all the ID3 info to be searchable and filterable, sortable, and let us choose what columns we want to display to ourselves. I know this would be similar to how Windows explorer works and that many options can be confusing for people and mean a worse user experience, but I think it can be implemented so that only who needs this feature would use it, eg.: make a switch in the settings.

Hello!!!

This  feature would really awesome, so please implement it for us. Why it is taking so long?

BenIsZero

As an avid music fan, across most genres and most decades, I have a lot of music in a lot of playlists.

I personally feel like it would be ridiculously awesome to have one of my 2000 track playlists to start in the 50's or 60's and go step by step, track by track, to 2020.

Of course, for me to organise this myself, I would need to research every song, make sure I have the correct version in the playlist, and then organise it. This would take an incredibly long time - more so than it would be worth, unfortunately.

I know Spotify has each song/albums release date recorded somewhere in its database. It'd be rad if this could be utilised in this way, should other people reading this agree.
