Spotify, Stuck in a Loop

Spotify increasingly feels stuck in a loop. The algorithm relies heavily on what we’ve listened to in the past and keeps pushing the same artists, the same songs, the same vibes over and over again. Instead of opening doors to new discoveries, it locks us into a comfortable but repetitive bubble. By prioritizing what already worked, Spotify ends up freezing our musical tastes in the past and slowing down real exploration, when music should be about curiosity, renewal, and surprise.

I really appreciate the thought behind this idea as it highlights an important conversation about how listeners discover music. From my own perspective as a Spotify user and someone who has spent years in customer-facing roles, I’ve noticed that many people place a high value on consistency and control in the products and services they use. When customers pay for a subscription, they often expect an experience that aligns closely with their established preferences.

For example, if someone is relaxing with a calm, soothing playlist on a Saturday evening, and an unexpectedly loud or intense track plays, it can break the atmosphere they intentionally created. Situations like this often lead to frustration, which is something we commonly see reflected in user feedback, not necessarily because people dislike discovering new things but because an abrupt change can disrupt the experience they were expecting.

That said, your point about encouraging broader musical exploration is meaningful. There’s definitely an opportunity to explore solutions that help users discover new music while still preserving the comfort, personalization, and predictability they rely on. Striking that balance could create a more enjoyable experience for both adventurous listeners and those who prefer familiarity.

Hi @orionproject13

Thanks for posting in the Spotify Community 😃

I came across an article recently from Android Police that makes a bold claim

How to fix your Spotify algorithm in under 5 minutes

And before you run off in search of the magic bullet let me walk you through an additional strategy that can help.

Your Release Radar grows with the number of artists you follow. Don't follow any artist just to get your numbers up. Follow the one's how have given you music you like. The obvious place to look first is in your liked songs. Follow collaborators too, that's where the real value is, as you never know where those collaborators will show up.

This can change the size and variety of your Release Radar within weeks. I know it's not '5 minutes' as claimed by Android Police, but it's a permanent change that's only slowed down by how quickly you can follow artists you like.

Another strategy that I'll discuss if you want me to. Is to follow curators who are already following thousands of artists. They don't rely in algorithmic suggestions.

Let me know how you get on, or if you want me to doing anything else for you. Thanks for sharing 😃

I find the automatic recommendations when disabling repeat so much more useful than daylist
