Using Spotify
Listen Everywhere
I find it really annoying when an artist releases a "deluxe" or other release of an album with a couple extra songs, and Spotify handles it by labelling them as completely separate tracks. The main reason this is frustrating is because:
- Not replacing tracks from an album in your playlist means the covers are inconsistent, and sometimes the deluxe cover is better.
- If you do replace the tracks with the new version of an album, you lose the original addition date of a song, and you may end up with an album cover you don't like.
- If you click "Go To Album" it's a gamble if you'd get the full release or an earlier smaller release.
- On top of this, albums often have "clean" releases. In the album Hardstone Psycho by Don Toliver, there are four different releases with varying tracks, explicit/non-explicit lyrics, and different release dates. They are also completely unlabelled- there is no way to tell them apart.
My solution is to switch up the way that spotify treats these tracks.
First, something not crucial (still useful):
Clean versions of a song should not be treated as separate releases, and instead be a toggle within an album, ep or single. Being able to switch mid listen would be even better, in the same vein as music videos.
My main proposition:
- ONE TRACK, MULTIPLE RELEASES. When a new album's lead single releases, it should count as part of your playlist when the album finally drops. Same should go for ANY re-release of a song. To switch the album cover, instead of STILL having to re-add the song to your playlist, Spotify could introduce a "Cover Gallery". This would let users pick the album cover from options attached to that song- i.e. the cover from the single, album, deluxe album, or others that the artist could add during the album upload process (or even later down the line).
- Users could set a default release of the album (for when they click "go to album", or if they are on their homepage, or an artist's page. The other releases of the album should only be viewable from the dropdown menu if they are on the album page- if they see the album anywhere, it should take them to their default version of the album. The extended version of JACKBOYS 2 by Jackboys and Travis Scott is almost completely inaccessible currently - that's the version I want to listen to if I want to listen to that album.
- To compliment having a default release, users should have one slot for a custom release of an album. This would mean being able to combine releases with varying tracks, and setting an album cover for that custom release based on any provided material from the artist.
A lot of artists provide alternative covers that go unseen on Spotify, and many also create multiple releases, causing confusion and frustration (at least for me).
