(Desktop) Playback issues with local files

We're receiving reports of users experiencing playback issues with local files. This seems to happen specifically on the desktop app, where playback stops at 0 seconds after every song.

Hey folks!

We're marking this as Not Right Now for the time being but it's on our radar.
Make sure to check the floated reply to find a workaround to this issue 🙂

In case you need any further assistance, don't hesitate to open a new thread in the Help boards.
Cheers!

Hey guys,

I've tried out a temporary fix mentioned before and thought I would share it here:

This was mentioned before but I thought I would elaborate with a step by step guide - the 'corrupted' audio files will have a sample rate of 48000, when you want it to be 44100. You can check what the sample rate is by right clicking your file and looking at properties, under 'Details' it will say "Audio Sample Rate" with a number. If it's 48000, write it down because you'll need to change it.

Open up the Audacity software and dump in your corrupted audio files, then immediately hit export (you don't have to do anything yet!) Before you export it will show a couple options on how to export (mp3, mp4, etc) - ignore everything except for the "Sample Rate" section, and select 44100 in the dropdown.

The file should now work.
It sucks that we have to resort to these methods but I hope this helps at least a couple people.

Good luck,
Bloodtraitor

Hi @Maria, thank you for finally listing the issue to the under investigation status! This has been something many people like me have been struggling with for some weeks. I can give you the details that you're asking and sorry for the wait, I took some time until I opened this page again. In my case I use:

- Asus TUF Gaming A15 with Windows 11 (make and model seems to not be relevant due to many different Windows 10/11 users having the same problem)
- The problem started (at least for me) since the update before 1.2.65.255.g85e641b4 (Windows (64 bits)), and someone else said that the last version that didn't had the issue was 1.2.60.564.gcc6305cb, at least that version is confirmed to not have the issue.
- I am inserting a screen recording that I had already sent in this thread that shows exactly what happens:

(here I had to click anywhere on the playbar for the music to start playing)
If the video for some reason doesn't play then you can use this link.

I hope the issue actually gets resolved, because someone else from the Spotify team said to me that they were also investigating the issue but for now it seems that it hasn't.

@Maria

You forgot to mention that it happens ONLY with songs that are 48000HZ SAMPLE RATE.

btw - When I try to subscribe to this thread i get " This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below."

I have been experiencing the exact same issue.

Hopefully we get this resolved as soon as possible.

Hi, I'm trying to play local media in Spotify, and all is working if I play a song from the "Local Media" section, but if I try and, for example, add it to Liked Songs and play it from there, it gives me a 'Spotify can't play this right now' error.

MacBook Pro (14-inch, Nov 2024, M4 Max), macOS Sequoia 15.5, Spotify for macOS (Apple Silicon) 1.2.67.560.g46a15f6b

EDIT: Seems like turning off 'Smart Shuffle' made it work?

I have a similar issue.

Using the Windows 11 on a desktop device, no vpn nothing special to the internet.  Validated that Spotify is allowed through the firewall.
I have attempted both the Website download and Windows Store Download.
I have no local files (that I know of) as this is a fresh build system.

No matter what I play from playlists it immediately stops and reports unable to play this file.

It works from the web browser on the same machine.  The App on the machine sees that im playing from the web and shows the video and functions correctly.  But swapping to the local application immediately fails with same error.
