(Desktop) Playback issues with local files

We're receiving reports of users experiencing playback issues with local files. This seems to happen specifically on the desktop app, where playback stops at 0 seconds after every song.

Hey folks!

We're marking this as Not Right Now for the time being but it's on our radar.
Make sure to check the floated reply to find a workaround to this issue 🙂

In case you need any further assistance, don't hesitate to open a new thread in the Help boards.
Cheers!

Hey guys,

I've tried out a temporary fix mentioned before and thought I would share it here:

This was mentioned before but I thought I would elaborate with a step by step guide - the 'corrupted' audio files will have a sample rate of 48000, when you want it to be 44100. You can check what the sample rate is by right clicking your file and looking at properties, under 'Details' it will say "Audio Sample Rate" with a number. If it's 48000, write it down because you'll need to change it.

Open up the Audacity software and dump in your corrupted audio files, then immediately hit export (you don't have to do anything yet!) Before you export it will show a couple options on how to export (mp3, mp4, etc) - ignore everything except for the "Sample Rate" section, and select 44100 in the dropdown.

The file should now work.
It sucks that we have to resort to these methods but I hope this helps at least a couple people.

Good luck,
Bloodtraitor

I'm having the same issue, I have playlists with both local files tracks and online spotify tracks, I've been doing this for years but only recently I've been facing the "playlist freeze" during the last month. This only happens on desktop, doesn't happen on iOS.

I wouldn't blame the files, because it used to work before, I even have files that don't play on iTunes/WMP but work fine on spotify, it's something that's been happening lately.

I also tried the reinstall, removing the folder and adding it back again, changing the location but no dice.

Spotify version:
Spotify for Windows (64 bits)
1.2.66.447.g4e37e896

Funny enough I have been having the same exact problem on my desktop only. When I play the songs on my iOS it works perfectly fine. I noticed this problem started happening a month ago and I've tried everything to resolve the issue. At this point I will just have to wait for Spotify to eventually know about it and come out with some sort of fix. A way to help bypass it and its pretty annoying is to set a hotkey your keyboard or mouse to play the next song and go back a song. That way you can still have the music playing endlessly.

My wedding is next weekend and I was having issues with some songs that I shortened. Your discovery of the 44100 fix literally just saved my life! Thank you so much!!

i have this weird bug that the next song doesn't play after the previous song has finished. Whenever the next song plays out,it doesn't move from 0:00 and pressing the play/pause button doesn't work but if i were move the music time slider or if i just picked a new song manually
,it would start to work again. i would like to keep on auto-play and shuffle my music at all times but it's preventing me to so

i have no idea if it's related to only local files at all but it seems like the bug only appears there.
i have already deleted the cache files and re downloaded the whole program multiple times and even downloaded through the Microsoft store to see if anything changed but nothing worked.

It just won't play the next **** song i've been trying to fix this **** issue for DAYS and reinstalling this trash doesn't fix anything even clean install.
All it does is finish the current song then move to another but it's stuck at 0 seconds and i have to pause and play or move it to 2/3 seconds for it to work again.

I've tried downgrading but the method that I tried doesn't seem to work anymore, could you link a guide or a video? Thanks in advance.

I tried downgrading too but it auto-updated again today and has the errors.

Cmon Spotify fix this issue already, can't be that hard to reverse engineer the issue when you even know the update that messed it up

Status changed to: Under investigation

Hey folks,

This is currently being investigated by our tech folks. Would you mind sending us the following:

  • Make, model and OS version of your device.
  • Exact Spotify version.
  • A screen recording showing how things look from your end (if possible).

Should the files be too large to attach here in the Community, you can send them to us as unlisted YouTube videos or via Google Drive. Just make sure to not include any personal info.

You can also Subscribe to this thread via the 3 dot menu to stay tuned. We'll keep you posted here if we have any news to share.

In the meantime, feel free to give the suggestions listed under Local File not playing? on this page a try, as well as disabling the Crossfade feature.

Cheers!
