Issue with storage option switching from SD Card to internal

My Question or Issue

This happened with my last phone, Samsung S7 running Oreo (or whatever the most recent OS is) but it was fixed when I got the Moto X4. I like to keep a lot of songs downloaded offline because my service is terrible and I also spend a lot of time in the mountains. Before I I update my phone to the new Android Pie OS there was no problems. Now everytime I reset my phone I think spotify cannot see my SD card at first and tries to download all the music to its internal storage and I have to go back in and tell it to store it in the SD card. That is extremely annyoing but not the end of the world. What is really frustrating is that I think all of the downloaded songs are still on the SD card and just keep redownloading and taking up space. Eventually this will cause me to reformat the card which will be a major pain for me since I store a large amount of photos on there also. Is anyone else have this problem? I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the application so any other suggestions or help?

Hey there.

We just wanted to let you know that we've looked into this with the right folks now.

We are currently trying to resolve the issue. We don't have a timeframe for a fix, but we're really glad you let us know about this. If you have any other questions, just let us know!

Keep your app up-to-date and have a nice day 🙂

In developer options near the bottom choose 'force allow aps on external'.
then in 'settings' go to 'apps' and scroll down to 'Spotify' clicking on it
will open 'app info' partway down you will see 'storage' click on that.
Under 'storage used' click 'change' and choose SD card. After its done
restart

Having similar problem with Moto G6 Play running Android 9

Turn developer options on. Near the bottom find 'force allow apps on
external'. Now click 'settings'> 'apps' >'spotify'. To get to 'app info'
(you can also do this by holding down on the Spotify icon then pressing the
'i' button) You will see a list the third one down is 'storage' click that
then under the heading 'storage used' click change and select 'SD card'.
This will move Spotify to the SD card, preventing it from starting before
the SD card is mounted.

Looks like the issue is solved.

But I cannot pinpoint how because a lot changed at the same time.

At first I would like to apologize for the Moderator. I was ready to brake my phone in half.

So I leave this here, maybe it will help for someone, but again I don’t know which change brought the result.

What I did.

  1. Complete clean removal of Spotify. All data deleted.
  2. Powered off my phone for 10 min to be sure
  3. Removed all devices on my Spotify web account
  4. Sourced a brand new SD card, that I installed.
  5. Fired up, installed Spotify and started downloading to SD.
  6. I downloaded more onto the SDcard than the free storage I had on the phone. So it cannot put it there even if it tries  (not to scientific but at that point I did not care)
  7. The next day my phone found an Android SW update. I installed it.

I don’t wanna jinx it but all my music is on the SD for two weeks now.

So to sum it up, what was new this time, is a new SD and Android update and the “overloaded” SDcard. No idea which did the fix. Probably the SW update.

I’m really happy that I can use Spotify again, but also scared to death every time I fire it up, fearing that it will show a download progress bar again. I need some time to recover from these..

To all fellow users… there is hope yet!

The procedure to force the app onto the SD card did not work on my device.
Motorola G6 Play running Android 9.

It wouldn't go on to the SD card?

Daedalus100
That's correct. Unable to move Spotify to SD card even after turning
developer options on and activating "force allow apps on external" option.

I'm not sure, maybe the format of the SD card. It works on Samsung and
LG... Sorry

The move-to-SD procedure also does not work on my mid-level phone (BQ Aquaris X2 Pro running Android One 9.0, the version that is closest to original Google Android and that guarantees 3 years of monthly security updates). I quess it is intentionally disabled there by the manufacturer, because they also cheaped out on other SD-related features (such as exfat driver, video recording to SD card etc), with the excuse of "it might be slow if bad SD cards are used".

I don't get why spotify would not fix that. It is a really easy fix, just put a handling function in there that triggers if SD-Card is configured and has been used in the past, but it is not yet available. Not doing so even costs spotify real money in traffic: I download an additional 15GB each time when I restart my phone.
