Issue with the Web Player skipping tracks on multiple devices

We received reports from users having issues with the Web Player skipping tracks after a few seconds of streaming (usually around 10) and occasionally displaying a "Spotify can't play this right now" error.

Hey there folks,

We really appreciate all your reports so far!

Our tech teams have looked into this, but weren't able to reproduce it. Since this issue could be caused by individual network setups, we'll close this thread as the issue is something that will need to be looked into individually or could get resolved by an overall system and/or functionality change.

Here are some troubleshooting steps that are worth taking a look into:

Check if there are any pending updates for your browser and install them. It's also highly recommended you manually check if the latest version of the Widevine plugin is installed. There's a detailed guide on how to do that in this article.

Below you can find some additional things you can try. Click on each section to expand it.

Audio Output & Sample Rate

Make sure Spotify is mapped to a valid audio device in Windows/macOS and that the sample rate isn’t set too high (anywhere between 44.1 and 192 kHz should be okay). Check “App volume and device preferences” and confirm Spotify is assigned to the correct output. You'll find a detailed guide on how to do that here.

USB DACs or external audio interfaces

Driver conflicts or odd configuration in advanced setups (e.g., gaming headsets, external DACs) can trigger errors. Disabling/re-enabling the device driver or trying a different USB port often helps.

Clearing hosts file

Check if the hosts file contains any entries with Spotify in the address and remove them. You'll find the steps to do this here.

Symlinks or moved browser data

If you moved your browser’s cache/profile via symbolic links, check permissions and confirm Widevine is working with the new location.

Firewall/Antivirus software or Ad blockers

Aggressive AV or restricted network policies can break DRM or streaming requests. Try disabling them briefly or test with another network. Uninstall any ad-blocker apps.

► In case you're using any DJ apps/ software for mixing or creating tunes

If you have any DJ apps/software for mixing or creating tunes, try disabling the option to exclusively use a specific sound card. You can try using a different device to verify if the issue is limited to your setup and/ or network.

We hope this helps. If you still need a hand, you can start a new topic in the relevant
Help board including all the steps you've tried so far and their outcome and we'll take it from there.

P.S. If you're on a non-personal device or network (student laptop, student network, corporate laptop, corporate network) get in touch with the administrator for more help! 🙂

It's funny, but in Firefox, forcing the Widevine plugin to update actually helps.
In Chrome and Opera, it doesn't work.
It would be nice to find a solution for these browsers too.

My Question or Issue

For last several days when I try to play songs on web player, it tells me "Spotify can't play this right now" and skips to another song until it finds the one that it can play. And even that song goes silent after 9 seconds of playing. I have tried playing Spotify on my phone with the same account and it has no issues. I don't have desktop app so the problem has only been on the web player. I have tried logging out and logging in again, unfortunately, it has not worked. I saw that this problem has been occurred back in the 2019, but that thread was not helpful.

no logra reproducir una cancion, sino que pasa a la siguiente y asi..

Mind if I tag along as I have exactly the same issue. Started a few days ago, and nothing that I have done has solved the issue. Using the web application, have cleared the cache, Log out/in, off/on, etc. Tried a different browser. No issue on my phone. This is as frustrating as it gets!

Status changed to: Under investigation

Hey there,

In case you're experiencing this, try updating your browser to see if that helps. It's also highly recommended you manually check if the latest version of the Widevine plugin is installed. There's a detailed guide on how to do this here.

If the issue persists, make sure to give a thumbs up and provide the following info (if you haven't already):

  • the browser you're using + the exact version you're running (including Widevine)
  • your OS version
  • the troubleshooting steps you've tried so far

Thanks! We'll pass the details on to our tech folks so they can look further into this.

As always, rest assured we'll keep you posted here as soon as we have any new information to share, so Subscribe to the thread from the three dots menu to stay tuned 👍

Same issue here on all my family plan accounts.

Either on Chrome or Firefox (both on their latest supported versions on Win7 SP1).

Five first songs of every playlist skipped, then 10 sec of Playback , then silence.

Needless to say, cleared cache and site's data, even refreshed Firefox installation.

To no avail.

As previously mentioned I've tried everything suggested, plus more, including clearing caches, Edge (not sure what version), disabling firewall, checking to see Widevine is up to date, hotspotting to my phone to use different network / IP address.

Have also tried on Macbook Air using Chrome, cleared cache, check Widevine, hotspot, with same results. Don't currently have access to the Macbook so can't give more details but suffice to say that's two entirely different set ups with the same problem so it's obviously not down to device specs.

Since both these devices were previously working and I've made no changes, this points to a problem at Spotify's end of the chain???

SAME issue for over 2 weeks now.

I've tried google chrome and Microsoft edge. I only get the "Spotify can't play this right now" error with SONGS but not with PODCASTS.
It skips up to 7 songs, then it plays a song for about 10 seconds and the track still going but no sound.
