[Connect] Bug report: Music played on Sonos doesn't show up in /me/player/recently-played

[Connect] Bug report: Music played on Sonos doesn't show up in /me/player/recently-played

All the music I play on my Sonos speakers doesn't show up when I query the  /me/player/recently-played API. It also doesn't show to my friends in the "Friend Activity" feed.

This happens even if I start playing from Spotify and I use the "Connect to a device" feature, not only when playing through the Sonos app.

It's like Spotify doesn't know I'm listening to it at all.

Note this also break the LastFM integration, since it uses the /me/player/recently-played API.

Hey there @elvaka

Thanks for reaching out about this here in the Community. Sorry for the delayed reply, we've just come across this thread.

Keep in mind that currently playing tracks get displayed in the Friend Activity and get recorded in your listening history only when they stream directly on a device. We can confirm that it's expected behavior that when you're using Connect, the streams are not shown to your followers and won't be displayed in your Recently played.

However, when you stream directly on the Spotify app, that information should show up there. In this case, it's well worth running a clean reinstall of the app on your devices to get rid of any cached files that might be causing trouble. This one is more thorough than the usual one.

On another note, we'd like to know if this always happened or if it started happening after a specific event such as an update.

We'll be on the lookout.

Thanks for your reply!

So, just to clarify... if I buy one of those fancy Spotify-enabled speakers, then I don't get any of the social features of Spotify. Is that correct? Is that really the intended behavior?

The songs are streamed directly on a device (Sonos speaker). The speaker is connected to the internet and is streaming the music directly from Spotify. Spotify Connect is used only as a remote to control the speaker. The user can close Spotify in all other devices and Sonos still keeps streaming.

The article about the Friend Activity feed here needs to be updated: https://support.spotify.com/us/article/friend-activity/

It currently says "Friend Activity shows you what your friends are playing." but according to the response on this other bug report it should read "Friend Activity shows you what your friends are playing, unless they play on a smart speaker." since that is the intended behavior and not a bug.
