In Windows 8.1 the sliders to change Preferences have stopped working. I am logged into my Premium account. Any ideas?

What Spotify version is this?

Have you tried a Clean reinstallation of Spotify?

Try toggling Hardware acceleration and see if that helps.

Many thanks, Anthony, I'll try reinstalling and switching acceleration, as you suggest.

As for Spotify, for me it's a miracle as far as making music accessible goes, but I'm disappointed at the minimal help they provide. Setting up a 'community' is fine for users to share and communicate, but Spotify uses it to slither out of the cost of supporting their product.
