Spotify Alexa skill does not work on Echo devices at all

Solved!

Spotify Alexa skill does not work on Echo devices at all

For months I have been using Spotify as my default music provider for my Echo/Alexa devices using the Spotify skill, and whilst it was pretty tempramental (such as sometimes not playing songs, playing the wrong song occasionally etc.) it was at least functional.

However, as of today I have acquired an Echo Dot and linked it to my Amazon account, and the Spotify skill seems to have completely stopped working. Asking the echo to play any song just ignores my settings and plays it through Amazon Music instead, and if I specify "on spotify" at the end it will just say that it can't find the song on Spotify. I have also tried relinking my Spotify account to no avail.

My playback issues on my Echo 4th Gen were resolved today using these steps from Spotify:

  1. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
  2. Tap the ⓘ icon next to the Wi-Fi network that you want to change DNS servers for. Scroll down to find the DNS section and tap Configure DNS.
  3. Tap Manual and add Google IP addresses. Optionally, you can also remove all default DNS servers in the list.
  4. For IPv4: 8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4
  5. For IPv6: 2001:4860:4860::8888 and/or 2001:4860:4860::8844
  6. Switching back to Automatic will restore the DNS server specified by the Wi-Fi network.

Also, we highly recommend you change your DNS settings from your router, so that it'll apply to all used devices. To do so:

  1. Log in to your router's web interface
  2. Find its DNS settings
  3. Enter your preferred DNS servers (the ones previously mentioned)
  4. Save your settings
  5. Restart your modem and devices

I hadn’t thought to manually configure the DNS from my iPhone for the network being used by the Echo. I had previously configured it to Google’s DNS from my router only.

Now my question is why do all my old Echo Dots work with the Xfinity DNS (75.75.75.75 and 75.75.76.76) but not my brand new Echo 4th Gen? Why would switching to Google’s DNS fix the issue? Does the Spotify Connect skill need to be updated for the newest Amazon Echo?

I hope this helps!

-Kyle

I would also suggest that anyone who is experience this issue check to see if they are using a range extender (a router that relays the router's signal).  I recently found that unplugging my range extender resolved exactly this problem

Doesn't work! Not a solution. See other posts!!!

This is still not fixed.

I work in IT and followed all of the steps listed under "solution" and then some, but i still can't make IT work.

My setup was working fine for years and only recently has stopped doing so.

Nothing about my network has changed and I revised everything with a fine toothed comb.

I implore you to revisit the Alexa Spotify Skill because this problem doesn't exist for Amazon Music of Apple Music.

Telling people to take down security!

This is going to make a lot of people cancel their Spotify subscription if this doesn't get fixed. I have the same issues and have restarted my modem, restarted all alexa devices, checked for all updates... still will not work.

I've had Spotify for a long time, this is the first time I've considered cancelling and moving to another service. Fix it asap or I will.

I have found another fix for this problem.

Change the MAC address of the Wi-fi router that you have connected the Alexa Echo to. And now Spotify should work as normal.

That’s obviously not a solution for everyone as many/most of the isps doesn’t allow you to change the mac address on their devices. Maybe can work in some cases but it just point to the poor network handling in the spotify skill

I would also suggest that anyone who is experience this issue check to see if they are using a range extender (a router that relays the router's signal).  I recently found that unplugging my range extender resolved exactly this problem
