My wife and I only now realized our daughter was watching videos and listening to podcasts. Letting your kids listen to podcasts is like letting a stranger with moral, ethical, philosophical, and religious/political views completely opposite to what your own family believes in and is trying to pass onto the next generation CONSTANTLY whisper into their ears. How are you going to demonstrate to your child the principals and values that you hold dear and believe are helpful in living a healthy and successful life when you have this third unknown "parent" constantly speaking to them outside of your knowledge. We are also going to cancel our family plan as this topic is at least 2 years old and spotify has not answered.
I have the same issue and I’m appalled that it’s not a basic feature. Spotify clearly don’t care based on the response but are happy to take our money.
I agree. What are the alternatives?
I've got a real issue with this one. My daughter's 11. "Spotify for Kids" is a little too restricted. So we gave her access to our spotify with the explicit content filtered. Only now it's a regular (and I mean, too regular for anyone to be comfortable) occurrance that she finishes listening to a kids audiobook podcast and we walk in to the room with "Call her Daddy" podcast on... thank God she's asleep!
Do better Spotify. It's pretty easy to LLM a transcript and "rate" content as mature.
Would be great to have a 'tweens' account that isn't so juvenile, but also protects kids from all the 18+ content out there..
I’ve spoken at length to customer service about this. The be blunt, Spotify don’t care. They just say the team are looking into it, thanks for your suggestion. Hundreds of parents have raised this for years and nothing has been done. Any kid over 12 doesn’t want to go on the Kids app as it’s clearly for younger kids. I’ve now cancelled my entire subscription, mine too as I’m so annoyed. It’s only when they lose significant money that Spotify will care. They have zero interest in safeguarding. The awful thing is, most parents don’t realise. So to summarise, for parents worried about this:
1) podcasts have no filter
2) videos have no filter (why did they add videos anyway to an audio app?)
3) comments on videos and podcasts have no filter
We are nearly 3 years on from this and nothing has been done to protect children from inappropriate content. In fact the problem is becoming worse with more low quality video content. When will Spotify take the safety of our teens seriously?
I'm going to likely cancel Spotify Family due to this issue. I can't let my kids use the app if it's got random video podcasts available.
