Plan
Premium Student
My Question or Issue
Please extend Premium Student. I have had Spotify since 2016 and also have been a student since 2015. I am still (unfortunately) still a student in university. I am no longer allowed to have the student pricing since I have had it for 4 years. What is the purpose of this cap on years for students? Some of us don't graduate right on time. As long as I have a valid student email address, I don't see what is the issue. I don't want to have to switch to Apple Music just to get the cheaper price, but I can't afford 10$ a month while in Uni for Spotify, despite loving the service.
I know I am not the only one who has posted this request, but it always gets turned down when people request for this. It is just senseless to limit people even when they meet the rest of the credentials.

Hey @Ampz ,
Thanks for reaching out 🙂
The average length of higher education lasts about 4 years in most countries, which is why Premium Student only lasts up to 4 years.
Spotify understands that some students stay longer at a college/university, but unfortunately, no special exceptions can be made in such case.
You can alternatively check out other reduced-price plans like Premium Family or Duo.
Hope this clears things up!
This is really hard to understand. Spotify should take into account the different lengths of studies and don't apply a random number of years to all users around the world. Not only we're still full-time students having very tight budgets, but legally we're recognized to be students, too, right? So what's the problem?
I have been using spotify since 2017, at first not a student so I paid the full price (but I was working so it wasn't an issue). Now as a student, I am thinking to go back to the free version. Kind of crazy that we can't have access to the offer as long as we are students.
Why would a student who can’t afford the basic premium but the duo when it’s just them or the family premium when it’s more. You already jacked up the premium prices. Make it make sense. If you are trying to help students then help them. Don’t hinder them. Most college students all over the world take longer than 4 years to complete their students. What you are doing is just greedy.
I'm a masters student and have had an email to say my student discount ends in January and because I've already had it 4 years my time is up basically! My masters degree doesn't end until September. What a stupid system! I was hoping to come here and see that there was a workaround but no. I'm not dealing with the rubbish that is free Spotify (tried it months ago to save money and it's appalling) so I think I'll be finding a cheaper service like Apple too. Sort it out Spotify.
Why would Spotify restrict it to 4 years because "its the average duration"? Why not make it available as long as you can validate/prove it by sending in the required documents. If you only study for 3 years, then youll get 3 years with Spotify student subscription. I dont see the logic of setting the limit based on the average. Pure greed.
I agree with what others have said here. I am a graduate student and believe this policy is unfair. It should be extended at least, or there should be no limit.
I just faced the same thing. I don't think music today is work $10 a month. Even if I wasn't still in school, I wouldn't pay over the $5.99 for this service. They don't understand their value.
And this is exactly why we all will be switching to apples student discount. lol. Thanks for nothing Spotify.
It’s been about 3 years… did you find a solution for this?? I have been a Spotify user since I started my bachelors… and now I’m a PhD student getting in total paid less than 28k a year… however, I am not able to get Spotify for students despite being one? It’s kind of absurd that at this point you guys don’t allow for extensions on maybe at least, a case by case basis. Disappointed. Guess I will have to look into Apple Music, despite being a loyal customer of Spotify before it even got big in the US.
At least 5 yrs. would be good. Help a student out with having some good tunes to study to without getting mind bent on advertisement.
This is not a solution, many people continue studying for over 4 years. People go back to do another bachelor's or they take a master's or PhD. And they are still on an extremely tight student budget. You would think that Spotify would honour that like literally every other place that does a student discount. I am considering leaving Spotify for this reason.
Agreed - I've been a student for (in total) 11 years (Double degree undergrad, Honours, Masters, Ph.D currently). Whilst spotify didn't exist back when I did undergrad and Honours (or I didn't know it existed), I did half my Masters without the student discount, found out about it and have been using it since. My Student 4 year cap is due to be up early next year, about a year before I'll finish my PhD. Seems ridiculous that I've actually paid premium cost whilst be a student even prior to activating the discount, and the 4 years won't even cover the total of my PhD time.
I agree with this. Student discount isn't something that can be extended for a longer time just because you stay longer in College/University. Let's just be grateful there's still such discount. If you can't afford it, if you think it's expensive then settle for free. Easy as that.
This policy is has been frustrating for me because I am seeking a professional degree as others on this thread have also mentioned, which requires much longer than four years of education. But more than that, this policy deserves to be re-visited because it completely alienates and discriminates against individuals with disabilities who may very well require longer than "an average" four year education plan. As well as individuals from lower income backgrounds like first gen students who often bear the burden of family responsibilities, caretaker roles, or the expectation to contribute financially -- all of which can and do often extend the length of study time. If someone has a valid university email address and the outside service that you already use can verify they are an active, enrolled student - they should be able to access the student rate. Do better Spotify.
YouTube Music has the same 4 year limit on their student discount, even though it verifies through student email. Seems like it's some sort of industry standard way of thinking. The only reason I could think of to have this limit in place is to avoid abuse (even though the verification process is very hard to circumvent), but even then it's questionable whether that would weigh up against the loss of customers by alienating them in this way.
Cordialmente,
Johan Andres Tibavija Guio
Around two-thirds of students take over six years to graduate college. Right now, the Spotify Premium for Students only allows for a user to use their college id for up to four years. This should be changed by either extending the limit, or removing it completely. It is illogical to have a student discount that does not end when the student graduates. Spotify just raised their prices, and it was supposed to help “invest in and innovate on our product features and bring users the best experience.” Now, I ask Spotify to make good on this statement and help out their loyal student subscribers by increasing the amount of years they can have spotify premium.
Spotify, I'm starting a second degree and would like to have the student discount again. It seems so easy to satisfy your users. With so many requests in just one post, it's surprising you don't listen to your users. I'll take my suggestion to another platform.
Yep this is so unfair I wish they would do something about it but then again… capitalism!!
I wish Spotify could extend their discount to last up to nine years. Many people are still in college and need extra years to finish their classes before they graduate. Since the current discount only covers a maximum of four years, extending it would be really beneficial for them.
Hey there you, Yeah, you! 😁 Welcome - we're glad you joined the Spotify Community! While you here, let's have a fun game and get…
