Hi there, I'm relatively new to Spotify. I love the service, but I'm kind of weirded out by one thing: of late, they've been playing two Trojan (condom) ads. This is fine in and of itself, but I listen to my music in common areas a lot, places where my family can hear. When it comes to the younger kids, I'm nervous about them hearing it (they also have Spotify accounts of their own, so I'm a little concerned about that, too, because the ads are a bit...specific); with the older relatives, I know it'll just be too weird. Is there any way to report an ad or stop if from playing on your personal Spotify? I don't mind ads at all--I just mind this ad, considering the fact that it's legitimately weird. Thank you in advance!
Solved! Go to Solution.
I play Spotifty at work...in a Church...and these condom ads are not only highly inappropriate but offensive. "Orgasmic" is not what I want blaring through the office. Especially when there are children around.
Perhaps you could limit when these ads play until nighttime instead of 9:30 in the morning...
Thanks.
Yeah these adds are incredibly offenisve. Some moderator smuck on another thread claims the adds have stopped but I'm still getting them when I listen to spotify.
Mod Edit - 'Smuck' here. The previous ad campaign stopped months ago. This is a different commercial. It's why a different thread was formed.
I am another otherwise happy Spotify user who does not not want to listen to condom ads. Spotify just became much less useful to me because when I am around kids or at work, I will stick with Pandora. Here are a couple of suggestions if you must keep Trojan as a sponsor:
1. Allow users to turn on kid-friendly/work-friendly mode where ads will be appropriate for these situations.
2. Play inappropriate ads after 9 or 10 pm (and have users set their time zone or use their zip code to determine their time zone)
3. Allow listeners to thumbs up or thumbs down ads- not only can people turn off the ads they don't want, but people are getting ads that are relevant to them. I can assure you I will not be buying cosmetic surgery or condoms any time soon, but I might pay attention to ads that were for things I will use.
I understand you operate a free service and that requires ads, but please keep them G-rated. Seriously, Spotify, I'm really disappointed.
Thank you Spotify for filling our Christmas playlist on Christmas morning with Trojan Condom ads. Even Pandora gives us the option to opt-out of certain ads...could Spotify not do the same?
Hate to complain, because I'm really enjoying Spotify, but can't you clean up the ads? I just had to awkwardly sit through a Trojan ccondom ommercial with a 9-year-old grandson in my studio. I can appreciate that you have to sell ad space, but really, do we have to listen to that kind of "soft porn" with no opportunity to opt out? I don't mind the constant stream of "upgrade to Premium" or the musicians plugging their latest releases. But I'm listening to classical Christmas music and am bombarded with condoms? Please! Put yourself in my shoes.
I love listening to Spotify with my daughter, but the condom ads are SO inappropriate!! Surely there must be a way to select more appropriate ads.
Lies! I just heard a Trojan commercial. At work! What the hell??
Just want to add my request that you please take out offensive advertising like these condom ads.
This is getting ridiculous. The part that got me fed up is where the girl on the Trojan commercial says "intensified orgasmic pleasure." My whole family, including grandparents and nephews and nieces was around and it's embarrassing. I am really disappointed with Spotify's service regarding this problem and will be uninstalling ASAP.
Just the fact that they would even consider these commericials is ridiculous when they know they have children listening to Spotify. Makes me wonder what kind of people are running this company.
I LOVE Spotify and I am a mature college student but I do not like how EVER SINGLE TIME there is a commercial there is a condom commercial. I know it is now rude but it is beyond annoying!! Other people might not have a problem with it but it is turning me off of Spotify VERY quickly!! Please make it possible for a user to skip a certain commercial and listen to a different one... Or you could just use a verity of commercials instead of the same one over and over and OVER!!!
I agree 100 % UGH
These Trojan ads are annoying as hell. I take my earbuds out every time they come on, and they do so in a rather repetitive cycle. I know they give you the money to keep it going, but seriously, are we gonna get peppered with more annoying ads until we sign up for spotify premium? What's next, Flo the progressive lady?
I just got spotify a day ago because of a high recommendation from a friend. However, I will immediately delete my account and go back to using Pandora if these Trojan condom ads continue. It is ridiculous that I am forced to listen to them. When you mute it, it pauses the commercial - really!? I DO NOT WANT TO HEAR IT!!! Seriously, Spotify. You are about to become something I complain about rather than recommend - to EVERYONE! Keep it up if that's what you want.
I completely agree, and will not play this site in my home unless these ads cease!
I find many Spotify ads annoying for many of the same reasons as other contributors to this thread. Rather than restate their objections again, I'm going to lay out the business case against Spotify's current advertising practices. I do this in the hopes that financial reasoning will change Spotify where consumer complaints have not been consistently effective. [My qualifications: I have years of experience in online advertising, conversion rates and end user preference measurement with some of the biggest sites on the internet.]
Spotify's current advertising practices are lowering the value of its product to customers and advertisers alike.
I'm sure that Spotify and its advertisers would love to have a sophisticated ad targeting system that would deliver personalized, high-conversion-rate ads. I'd be surprised if such as system is not on Spotify's backlog, but such systems take time and resources to develop. In the meantime, a simple binary flag could be quickly implemented that would increase the value of Spotify to customers, advertisers and financial backers alike. The simplest case would be to add a binary "Mature-content" flag to user profiles and advertisements and to only serve Mature ads to people who have indicated that such ads are acceptable.
It's entirely possible that Spotify decision makers feel that they might lose advertising revenue if they do anything like this that diminishes the reported size of its audience. I think the probability is greater that if Spotify does nothing, its audience will grow more slowly if at all, and advertisers will abandon Spotify due to low conversion rates.
By the way, in reviewing threads on this site related to this topic, I see some posts by Spotify Community reps that purport to give solutions to particular complaints. The solution, to remove ads that generate a particularly large number of complaints from the ad rotation, is a poor one. It doesn't prevent similar situations from reoccurring and it's not a good way to do business with advertisers. Spotify needs a technical solution that matches ads to customers. A simple binary flag would be a good start.
I must be one of the few who think these ads are funny as hell. Considering the barrage of crap that people are exposed to on prime time television, these ads should be the least of your worries.
Furthermore, I’ve read on a few of these posts that there are children using Spotify and that ads should be "G-rated". Tell me, have you read Spotify's terms and conditions?!?
Still want to get rid of the ads? Pony up and put your money where your mouth is, join Spotify premium!
Quit bitching about their FREE service. Seriously, try finding another program that lets you stream songs you want, when you want, without being limited by how many songs you can skip – there’s nothing out there that even comes close.
I am getting the Trojan Ads far to often. I listen to spotify at work and the playing of a condom commercial could be seen as a violation of company sexual harassment policy. Please discontinue ads or I will have to stop using spotify
read their terms and conditions:
"In order to use the Spotify Service, you need to (a) be 18 or older, or be 13 or older and have your parent or guardian’s consent to these Terms, (b) have the power to enter a binding contract with us and are not barred from doing so under any applicable laws, and (c) be resident in the Local Country. You also warrant that any registration information that you submit to Spotify is true, accurate and complete, and you agree to keep it that way at all times."
I've been listening all day today at work and not one single Trojan ad has come on. Maybe they're paying attention to our suggestions!
Hey there you, Yeah, you! 😁 Welcome - we're glad you joined the Spotify Community! While you here, let's have a fun game and get…
