Is it legal to use a third party spotify downloader for personal use?

Hi, I'm wondering if it would be legal to download Spotify music using a third party downloader like spotifydown. It's for personal use and I have a free plan. The reason I want to download music is to listen the music from my old IPhone 5c that can't support the Spotify app or website. If I download music from Spotify using a third party downloader, do I face any legal consequences?

Hey @PhatGus

Using downloader tools like the one you mentioned is against Spotify's terms of use and thus it's considered piracy. So I would advise against using sites like that.

Perhaps it's possible for you to get a cheap / second-hand phone that's new enough to support the Spotify app. Since you're using Free plan, the phone doesn't even need that much space.

Hope this offers some clarity 🙂
have a lovely day!

Where in terms of use is this stated?

Thanks!

i cant find anything related to third party downloading

What do I do if I didn’t know that it was against tos and downloaded music

Keep the files and admit nothing /j

In all seriousness, as long as you haven't distributed any files to others and don't continue to use the pirated files/download more, you should be fine. Of course, this is just a hypothetical question, right?

Note that I do not condone piracy, nor do I think that you are 'innocent' or that the violation is null and void in the event that you stop using the files. I am just saying that most people who pirate these files and then delete the files after realizing that it's wrong don't face legal charges or anything. This happens more often than you might think, as people will stumble onto a 'free, convenient way to download music!' without realizing that it's piracy and violates the Terms of Use of most platforms. Now, if you were to admit to doing something like that publicly on Spotify's community page, then you would likely face some sort of punishment.

Totally, I haven't used a 3rd party downloader because I realized I didn't even listen to music offline, so I didn't really need to know anymore.
