One game that I like is a card game called Magic: The Gathering (MTG). I used to have a lot of fun collecting MTG cards and building decks as a kid, sometimes playing against friends; while more recently, I started occasionally playing MTG Arena, the online version of this game.

There are a few songs that I like that remind me of MTG, including:

  • “Planeswalker,” by the post-metal band Homecoming:

In MTG, you play as a Planeswalker, casting spells and summoning creatures, which are represented by the cards in your deck. There are also Planeswalker cards, which represent allies that you can summon to help you; you can activate one of their abilities each turn, depending on how many “loyalty counters” the Planeswalker currently has.

I haven’t heard the term “Planeswalker” used outside of MTG, so this particular song always reminds me of this game when I listen to it!

  • “Wyrm,” by the stoner rock band Greenbeard:

Wurms are a type of creature that you can summon in MTG. They typically require green mana (there are 5 colors of mana in MTG, of which green is usually created by “tapping” forest-type land cards); and as my favorite deck to use in MTG Arena has only forest land cards, I have several Wurm cards in this deck. Wurms also usually have high power and toughness, and probably for this reason, they tend have high mana costs.

Just yesterday, I re-discovered this song by Greenbeard; and while its title is spelled slightly differently than the MTG cards that it reminds me of, it still brings to mind cards from my online deck such as “Bramble Wurm” and “Bookwurm” when I listen to it.

  • “Sleep Of The Black Lotus,” by the stoner rock band Wo Fat:

https://open.spotify.com/track/607UyLaRRinnZrtim7VWSK?si=1d5266e88cc343d9

Black Lotus is a rare MTG card, which is an artifact that can be sacrificed once cast to add 3 mana of any color; and in MTG Arena, the deck builder has an icon represented by a lotus (perhaps inspired by this card), which indicates the availability of different rarity wildcards to add to your deck.

While it’s possible that it’s simply due to chance that Wo Fat included the name of a MTG card in this song of theirs, "Sleep Of The Black Lotus" often reminds me of this game when I listen to it.

Cheers!
