Changes to Web API

Changes to Web API

Folks, some news on changes to the web API has been posted on the Spotify For Developers blog.

We want to reiterate the main message from the blog that we're committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all Spotify stakeholders. As such we have recently made some important changes related to access to some of our endpoints and functionality. You can read the details on the blog: https://developer.spotify.com/blog/2024-11-27-changes-to-the-web-api

We are here to listen to any feedback you may have.

I needed the BPM and key signature data. The only solution I’ve found is https://songstats.com/for/developers which is still basically using the info from Spotify (though it also pulls from other services if you need data that they provide)

I emailed and they’re charging me 0.02eur per unique request. Not brilliant as Spotify was free, but it was the only way I could get my app working again so I’m just keeping my eye on the costs.

they basically smashed all my ideas i had as i started making a misc fun website using the api which from an experiment turned to a hella useful tool, especially the BPM get as i made a color flashing functionality for fun 😞

same here... plus recommendations and grouping by bpm and/or key for custom mixes... i was so shoked thought i has something suddenly broken with the code and when i searched it up... turns out now me 😕 the api being cut down was y last drop, i stayed only cus of it for years, guess its time to move away from this forsaken platform

im truly devastated, i had made an app to make a disco-like flashing colors based on BPM which then turned to adding to and making exact BPM based playlists and tones more tinkering just by having the "audio features" details...

This is such a dissapointing decision. I've been making home projects with Raspberry Pi's utilising these features for some time. It would be great if we could access these features in the future.

Meow...

This is a really crappy move. I really enjoyed using your API as I was learning python and really learned a lot. But to neuter such a wonderful feature is a gut punch. I had been telling people who were skeptical of Spotify's business practices in general that the main reason I stuck with you is because I had done so much with the (formerly) awesome API you have. Now, I'm going to cancel my subscription. I've been a subscriber for many years.

I'm not disappointed, I'm just mad

I have been enjoying integrating Spotify's API in my classes for the last three years so that students can work with awesome brands who *were* still committed to developer communities while learning the basic skills for their careers in data and technology. With this change, good bye Spotify and now I'll be discussing you in the same breath as Reddit, Twitter, Meta, etc. Really sad to see this change go through and lose so much for students, but I guess that's the reality of the current dumpster fire that is the modern corporate tech industry.

I'm heartbroken.

Maybe the original post should be update a bit, at least remove the last sentence.

"We are here to listen to any feedback you may have."
Suuuure we all got that feeling, 320+ replies and not a single update or anything.

Soo sad I had to do this, but simply can't support a company that treats it's developers like this.

I've been a premium user for as long as I can remember and since Spotify got accessible in my country.

But sorry, this change is simply to much for me.

What can people recommend?
Maybe Tidal, seems epic with the 24 bit HiRes sound.

Tidal is indeed good. The quality of audio is miles better than Spotify.

how many songs would you need for a demo for your application? I got 300 song data downloaded

you can send me a friendship request on discord: lonersourcecode

I must admit that I mainly used the Playlist-related interface for my personal needs. Do we get any post related to this?

I have used this for several years....

@Mat30... are you asking if they have acknowledged any of the complaints and grievances listed on this thread?

lol

no. They don't give a flying fart about our complaints and grievances. Spotify in general is really good at that.

Spotify's slowness to respond and react to customer feedback is exemplary bad and highlights how one should never react in a competitive market, even if they are currently the market leader.

Spotify is like a seriously ill stubborn senior, selective with his hearing, getting slightly paranoid, ravaged by dementia and in the grips of Alzheimer's. It's ridiculous, the silence and the disregard for the topic, the way Spotify shows that it doesn't care at all.

Booo what the heck?

This has essentially killed like...several apps. Probably a lot of apps I use almost daily that use that stuff 🙄

Spotify is only fun for me when I can use apps that correspond with it. This is more devastating than when Heardle was bought and then killed 😞

hey, this sucks. you're making the music experience way more shitty than it needs to be. lots of people, including myself, were relying on it to build personal hobby/school projects that are now flushed down the drain with no warning. hiking up rates and killing features is sure a great way to retain users.

For the last several months I've been building a project that could create a unique Spotify playlists excluding all the tracks you've ever scrobbled to LastFM. I used Spotify built-in recommendations algorithm for that. I also used audio features API to build statistic charts for my LastFM library tracks.

Seriously spotify?! what a terrible way to handle this, no warnings deprication notice at all is crazy!! Why not crank down on the rate limits if you're so worried about people scraping data for AI training. This literally hits personal projects and single user apps the hardest.
