Changes to Web API

Changes to Web API

Folks, some news on changes to the web API has been posted on the Spotify For Developers blog.

We want to reiterate the main message from the blog that we're committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all Spotify stakeholders. As such we have recently made some important changes related to access to some of our endpoints and functionality. You can read the details on the blog: https://developer.spotify.com/blog/2024-11-27-changes-to-the-web-api

We are here to listen to any feedback you may have.

I've also spent months developing an app for personal use, which relied deeply on the audio analysis, that now doesn't work.
It's a devastating blow to have all my work for the last months being thrown away like this.

I'm really hoping you reconsider this decision. It will be really important for the whole developer community of Spotify, as well as a lot of users.

let me know if you find a solution

please bring preview_url back for apps in development mode

In replies I've found support chat where Spotify will offer replacement API for preview_url, is it true? when can we expect it?

Same problem with Last.fm!

This is insane! Months of work gone to trash. I was building a sustem to better create playlists based on the audio features. No AI, purely algorithimic.

Please make the audio features function available again.

I am very disappointed with the change and your decision not to continue making the API open for public use.
I have developed a few different applications recently, for my own pleasure but also because of my profession, and they both depended on Spotify's API for their operation. Develop a few of my own ideas into projects that would have made better recommendations by analyzing the listener's previous listening history as well as mirroring the people, artists and bands he followed, taking into account all possible variations that affected the listening experience. For all this information, the API proved to be an invaluable source for my application.

One of the projects might be so significant that it helps me get a job on the job market.
Does this news mean that there is no longer any intention to bring back a similar function?
I would like a thorough explanation of this and an explanation of what other changes we can expect with horror?

My months of work was wasted and straight to the trash because of you.
You should be ashamed and now I finally have a good reason to think about other options because there are parties among your competitors who care and value users but also application developers much more.

It is undoubtedly disappointing that a public API has been changed without any warning. I would like to know if the extension application can be restored now? If possible, can it be processed as soon as possible? We trust your API 100%, but the result paralyzed our online functions.

I discovered my app was broken in the middle of a flight lol I though it was due to the wifi. So sad that I had spent months for nothing. I was refactoring my code so I could apply for the extension quota.. and now, it's all over. I've preparing my portfolio to showcase the app and apply for jobs. I was developing a 3D audio visualiser which made use of audio analysis data. I was so happy that I achieved what I had always dreamt of :'( At least I made a little demo during the first phase of the project. You can take a look here: https://www.jeffsilva.xyz/work/muze

Maaaaaan why?? I was using the audio-features and analysis endpoints in my final project for an art course and my project was relying heavily on those two. I have to hand in my project in a week and now i have nothing! So, thanks for Nothing!

Please add api endpoints for spotify for creators so i can post video episodes via API

Serious? So no longer access to my daily mix/discover weekly/release radar playlists? That's it for me, I'm giving Deezer a chance now. Anyone experience with the Deezer API?

I am disappointed in these changes.

That's pretty bad. Hopefully an app in that 'extended quota mode' will get back to life. What's also not the best - there is an info on the request page of that mode about 6 weeks or even more of waiting time till someone process it, so yeah, as many here, I was about to release an app and here we go with a little lesson of patience.

I have been working on a project for my degree using these calls, with the deadline fast approaching I don't know what to do now.

I was also developing an app that needs access to Discover Weekly and Release Radar playlists. Debugged a few hours why I started to get 404 errors for those playlists and now encountered this post, guess the whole project can now be deleted since it doesn't have any point to exist without access to those playlists. These changes are huge disappointment!

At this point, "Spotify for Developers" might as well be called "Spotify Against Developers". For over half a decade, Spotify has ignored heavily-requested features (where the infrastructure already exists!), randomly broken API endpoints for no reason, and now this. I don't know why they pretend to care about developers when they only show up to slap us in the face.

Spotify has shown that they don't care about a collaborative environment and will withdraw access without warning. I'm sure they will do this again in the future.

I'll be moving my development efforts to supporting open-source music projects from now on, and seeking out alternatives to Spotify as my music player.

For anyone who relied on the Audio Features like I did, AcousticBrainz is an open-source alternative. As of 2022, they aren't collecting new data, but the API is still available and you can download the entire database. I'm sure they would appreciate support towards their other projects, too, such as ListenBrainz.

committed to ensuring it provides the best possible opportunities for developers, artists, creators and listeners

I would like to know specifically how you (Spotify) are upholding this commitment. It would seem that every move or update made for as long as I can remember has done exactly the opposite and this was another slap in the face to those who really care about music and music data.
