Changes to Web API

Changes to Web API

Folks, some news on changes to the web API has been posted on the Spotify For Developers blog.

We want to reiterate the main message from the blog that we're committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all Spotify stakeholders. As such we have recently made some important changes related to access to some of our endpoints and functionality. You can read the details on the blog: https://developer.spotify.com/blog/2024-11-27-changes-to-the-web-api

We are here to listen to any feedback you may have.

If you’re working with Spotify audio analysis and need access to track features like tempo, energy, key, valence, and more — we’ve built an independent API solution that may help.

After Spotify restricted access to many of these features in late 2024, we launched our project to restore that functionality for developers, researchers, and creators.

You can find us by using the same name as my profile and simply adding “.info” — everything you need is there, including full API documentation.

Happy to answer questions or assist if you need something custom.

This has literally destroyed my app project I've been working on for weeks, thanks, guys.

100000% same thing just happened to me 😞 I have a research poster due in 10 days and I'm unable to complete it because of this change... wondering if you were ever able to find a workaround, especially for audio features?

Loving the new API updates—especially the cleaner endpoints and improved error messages. Makes dev life so much smoother. Even found a way to pull 'was ist heute sub des tages' more efficiently. Nice work!

It's a big shame you're not allowing access to app-generated playlists anymore!
You become the very thing you wanted to destroy. The whole goal of Spotify was to share music and love, but now I can't even create a simple automation to read a blend playlist and create one big shared list out of it. Even when it was created by my own music!

Just killed months of work!

Especially devastating is the fact that last months I was helplessly trying to get through the bureaucracy of app approval. Spotify just waiting for month, then closes request with formal reply, not even understanding the request. And without leaving any chance to discuss the subject. And then you need to start over: try to understand what exactly they didn't like, submit new request and wait another month.

And after that they say that apps with existing extended mode access remain unaffected! Grrr. This is no way to keep enthusiasts with you, Spotify. Need to switch to competitive platforms.

the most unfortunate part of it all is that no competitive alternatives really exist (at least as far as audio analysis). When Spotify bought The Echo Nest years ago, everything basically went offline and was under the sole control of Spotify. as far as I can tell, nobody else has anything remotely like it.

Please, don't. Audio analysis is one of the most interesting and useful part of your APIs.
