Clarification: internal business DB + AI workflow using Web API playlist/chart metadata

My Question or Issue

Hi,

We plan an internal (non-consumer) system that:
1) reads public Top/Viral chart playlists via Web API,
2) stores track metadata (name, artist, URI, rank, fetched-at) in our DB,
3) feeds that metadata into an internal AI-assisted catalog workflow.
We will not resell Spotify data or build a competing streaming app.

Please confirm if this is allowed under current Developer Terms/Policy, especially:
- storing Spotify Content in a business DB (and allowed retention),
- using metadata as AI/LLM input vs model training,
- whether playlist-based “charts” need a separate commercial license,
- correct channel for approval if standard Terms do not cover this.

Thanks for getting in touch with the Spotify Community. You’re definitely in the right place.

I can see why you’d want to work with the Top/Viral charts playlist in your project, especially if you were hoping to store it in a database and use it in a machine learning model. It’s a creative idea, but Spotify’s rules make this particular use case impossible.

To clarify, apps can only access playlist items from playlists they created or collaborate on, which means the charts playlist isn’t available for this kind of use. The Developer Terms also only allow temporary caching, so storing Spotify data long term isn’t permitted. And on top of that, both the Terms and the Policy prohibit using Spotify content in any AI or machine learning models.

Because of these restrictions, this use case unfortunately cannot be carried out. I hope this helps you understand why it isn’t possible.
