In the past I must have gotten a free trial ... I cancelled google play ... signed up for the family plan invited two people ... tried to upgrade to premium the only option is 3 month trial ... I try that an a link comes alive saying you must click here you have had a trial BUT it takes me back to the 3 month family trial ...  not sure what I am doing wrong here but I has to be easier to take my money ... I don't want to set up a new email

Could you try going here and select Premium Family to get started? If that doesn't work, try the same thing using a different browser or private window.
