Redeeming gift card ended trial

I was on the 3-month Spotify Premium trial when I redeemed a $36 AUD (3-month) Spotify Premium gift card.

After reading the help articles and asking the AI for assistance, I assumed that redeeming this gift card would not overwrite my trial but would instead take effect when my trial ended (payment date).

However, when I redeemed the gift card on the 8th of September, my next payment date was updated to the 8th of December, meaning that my free trial was overwritten.

Is this the intended behaviour?

Just a heads-up — gift cards can’t be added while you’re on a free trial. When activating it, you should’ve seen a message letting you know that redeeming the card would forfeit any remaining Premium time.

While this article doesn’t specifically mention gift cards, the same rule listed under Premium Individual or Student applies: “If you’re upgrading from a free trial, the payment will be taken immediately.” In this case, the gift card would be applied right away.

Yep, that's right! You'll need to wait until your free trial is over before adding your gift card. Once the trial ends, you can redeem it normally without losing any of your free months.
