On Desktop, there is more than one way to toggle your Friend Activity panel on and know what your friends are playing at the moment.
Except for the icon 
A) Edit > Preferences > Social > “Share my listening activity on Spotify”
B) Edit > Preferences > Social > “Show my recently played artists on my public profile”
C) Edit > Preferences > Display > “See what your friends are playing”
D) Edit > Preferences > Social > “Show my follower and following lists on my public profile”
