My Question or Issue

Recently the quality of Daily Mixes have declined significantly. I tend to listen to albums that have a short intro (1-2 minutes long) and long individual tracks. And in the past few weeks all of my Daily Mixes are filled with these intros and very short tracks from the albums (very few are over 7-8 minutes long).

Whatever the change it was, I'd appreciate if it was reverted or improved.

...and after 2-3 weeks of getting back normal DW level, here i am, moaning about second week in a row of short DW again 😕

That's just not true. My classical daily mix consists of pieces under two minutes each. When I listen to classical albums, average track length is much longer. I listen to a lot of Mahler and Buchner, many of their movements are over ten minutes.

Hi everyone,

I've also been noticing the same issue for weeks (maybe even months) now, so @Spotify: I think it's safe to say that it is not based on listening activity but it's an actual issue caused by a change in how the playlists are generated. (But of course if it took a while to realise we might have been liking short songs over the past time - making it even worse). However: in my playlists I have songs that are mostly between 4-10 min. still so seems odd.

This is what my Discover Weekly looks like, ordered by duration:

Would we great if this would get fixed 🙏

Thanks

Absolutely the case with me as well. Please fix this awful new change! I may have to leave Spotify otherwise.

Same here, mostly listen to metal and songs are almost exclusively more than 5 minutes long. Discovering new music on Spotify is completely useless, as when playing a radio most of my time is spent skipping short songs. To make matters worse, almost all the songs that actually are long, proper songs are ones that I already have in my playlists.

I am really close to switching to a different music streaming provider now.

I'm struggling with the same issue: the recommendations are dominated by 1-2 minute interludes and it's becoming annoying to the point that the whole mix is unlistenable. There is no way to dislike a song in the desktop app. Might as well cancel my subscription since this was one of the best features of the whole service.

Hi! I've got the same issue here. I've been a heavy user of the Discover Weekly playlist for many years now, but for the last month, the playlist has got much shorter, featuring many songs with less than a minute or 1min30, resulting on an average total duration of 1 hour or even less. Before that, my DW had an average duration of 2 hours. The songs featured on the playlist are somewhat good/adequate to my tastes, not in the same level as before, but the problem really is about the duration. What could have happened, an algorithm change? Please, consider fixing this issue, it's really making me think about also cancelling my subscription.

Same problem here, DW mix lasts 1h. Any updates on solution or still not enough unsatisfied people to start doing anything? 🙂

it's nice to get "likes", but it seems it would be more useful to upvote (and ask your friends too) the same problem highlighted by kweij:

My Question or Issue

What it says in the title. The majority of the songs in my newest discover weekly playlist are only 1-2 minutes long, making the total playlist length about 1 hour, whereas it used to be around 2 hours previously. The feature is worthless when it mostly consists of intros and interludes. A friend also confirmed that she has the same issue.

I've also long noticed that Spotify keeps recommending ridiculously short songs when autoplay recommendations are switched on.

Hello,

2nd of Oct, nothing has changed. Would I dare to say it's even worse ? Recommendation of the week has 1 listenable track only, out of 30. Amazing.
So I'm asking again, can the devs add a simple option in parameters to get rid of any track under the 3min mark please ? The streaming model is corrupting music production overall, this was not the intent I reckon, but when there is an issue let's at least think about some forms of solutions. Let the end user choose what they want to listen to.. And as far as I'm concerned, I don't want to participate in this maskerade of modern music production.

And btw, I NEVER listen to 1-2min tracks. There are auto-swipe. So dont tell me these recommendations are based on my use.

I'm seeing the same thing. This is so stupidly frustrating. Why would I want to just listen to 1:00 long songs?

I have to imagine this is the newest ghoulish way Spotify is trying to sneakily drive more streaming money by having us cycle through more music in a shorter amount of time.

18 out of the 30 songs on my Discover Weekly are under 2 minutes long this week. Even the ones over 2 minutes are barely breaking 3 minutes. As someone who listens to a lot of music that embraces much longer track times, this is incredibly annoying. How am I supposed to enjoy a playlist filled with interludes and transition tracks? wth is this?

My Discover Weekly this week is the worst I've had yet. They've completely ruined the algorithm. It was bad enough when it played short songs on the auto-play radios. But I always looked forward to Discover Weekly as it still recommended great songs. Now it's nothing but intros and interludes. Great job Spotify Devs, you've ruined it.

Discover Weekly is a feature I've grown to love over the years. I have been a Spotify subscriber for 11+ years so have been using DW since the very beginning.

I have had the same issue as many have described above. For months now, most DW songs are under 2 minutes long. I have been talking about this to friends who have observed the same thing with their DW as of late. As It's obviously a change at Spotify's end, given how widespread this seems to be.... Please, Spotify at least, let people opt out of it if they want to.

I find it interesting that everyone in this thread is listening to ambient, like it's an issue in how the algo is handling the genre. My discover weekly is 1hr33 this week, including 14/30 songs that are <2 minutes in length 😂

My DW is 51 minutes long this week, and I guess there are no ambient songs included (maybe 3 or 4). The theory makes sense but I guess the algo is problematic for every music genre as of now. 🤧

I'm having the same issue the last few weeks. I liked discover weekly because it was long enough to listen to on the way to work, but now it runs out before I get there. I generally don't like songs less than 2 minutes so I certainly haven't been listening to them outside of Discover Weekly.

My last playlist only had one song over 4 minutes, 2 songs at 3:30, and the rest were all under 3 minutes, half of those being under 2. And I'm not listening to ambient or techno type music or even intros to albums, the songs I'm getting reflect that but they are still short so it's definitely not an issue with genre choice.
