How do I make the "Use compact library layout" preference stick?

My Question or Issue

I prefer the compact layout for the library in the desktop app, so in the settings screen, I've set "Use compact library layout".

However, periodically I open the app and find that the library has reverted to non-compact view, without my having changed anything in Settings. I have to go back into Settings and switch to compact view... then at some later date it reverts back.

How can I put the library permanently into compact mode so that it will never change back against my will?

This is currently not possible, but you can submit an idea describing what you want to achieve in detail. Here is how to do it.
