My Question or Issue

Ive just created a new playlist. How do I stop Spotify from adding in “recommended” songs to the playlist? I only want to listen to the songs I’ve added myself.

I do not have a button that says “enhance” like many guides say I should have, so I’m unsure what to do.

Hey @9fywr-_ejpnbb, thanks for asking in the Community!

The behavior you are describing could be related to Smart Shuffle. See if there is a new icon in place of the shuffle icon on the playlist. If there is, please disable it and see if that makes any difference.

You can read more about Smart Shuffle here.

If this does not help, do share a screen-recording of the same, so I can take a closer look at what's wrong.

Sorry if this isn't the correct place to ask, but I'm experiencing the same issue.

One of my playlists has ballooned to 500 songs, but I have only manually put in about 50. I understand how Smart Shuffle works, but the list is just as long when that is disabled. I have not added any songs when suggested. I can start over with a new playlist, but I don't want to repeat the same result if there is a setting I need to change.

Hey @BeechCedar727,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community and welcome.

This is an odd behavior, taking into account that the system cannot add tracks to your playlists by itself. So first, we'd recommend checking if the affected playlist is a Collaborative playlist as that might explain the added tracks.

If it's not, we'd recommend following the process mentioned in this article (under the section "Still have access to your account?") to secure your account and make sure no one else is using it or adding tracks without your authorization. This way, you can make sure that the behavior will not happen again with other playlists.

Hope this helps. If you have any additional questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you for the reply, and for the welcome.

This is not a Collaborative playlist - I have never used that feature.  I appreciate the security caution, but this is a secure account and no one is adding any songs without my authorization. I am sure it's a glitch, or user error. The added songs seem to come only from my other playlist - so that the playlist in question is almost identical to what I consider my master playlist.

Maybe this is some ghost in the machine that can never be explained. I will start over with a new playlist, and hope that this doesn't repeat itself.

Thanks!

Hi @BeechCedar727,

Thanks for the reply. The Spotify shouldn't really be able to add songs to playlists by itself, so there has to be something else going on here. Provided your account is indeed secure, try disconnecting any third party apps that you may have connected as shown here, as those can sometimes manipulate the library.

If the issue persists, could you let us know if you've noticed when and how it happens? As in, do the new songs appear overnight, while you're using the app or at some other random moment? What other devices do you use Spotify on besides your phone?

Let us know how it goes.

Hi @Joan,

Thank you for the reply. I believed that I had never granted a third party app access to Spotify, but I used the link and found that I had granted access to Waze - although I have never played Spotify through Waze in my car (or otherwise).

I have created a new "test" playlist with only 5 songs and will see what happens. I am not sure how and when it happened in the past, but I will try to monitor it going forward. I use the Spotify app on my iPhone, and also play it through the app on my MacBook Air - sometimes controlling through both during the same period.

Thanks again!

Ed

Hi @BeechCedar727,

Thanks for the reply. It's a great idea to use a playlist like this to test the behaviour. Let us know when you have news on the progress and we'll gladly investigate further.

Keep us posted.

Hi
I have seen that Spotify playlists will be affected by Commercial recommendations. This explains why I have been getting some terrible recommendations recently and I feel like these Commercial recommendations are negatively affecting my experience. As a paying customer I would like to opt out of having these songs put into playlists. They are adverts and I'm subscribed to remove the adverts.

Adding on to this, I will cancel my subscription if this "feature" is not removed. This is absolutely ridiculous - why would I pay $12 a month if I can't even control the songs I listen to? I actually enjoy Spotify's recommendations when I'm just putting a short queue together and end up listening to music longer than intended, or when I'm starting a new playlist.

But if I'm playing a defined playlist or an album, why are you adding songs??? It makes no sense to me and I hate it. I honestly think it's the single worst change y'all could have made.

Get rid of it or I get rid of Spotify.

They added a new "feature" and they're adding "recommendations", which companies can pay to be a part of, to all queues. It's dumb and I hate it, and will cancel my subscription over it if it is not corrected.
