Local files with a space in the name get greyed out!

Solved!

Local files with a space in the name get greyed out!

So, whenever I close the app, even when the main Spotify that hosts the files is open, files in a few specific playlists with spaces in the names get greyed out. I've done a clean install of the app on my phone and I've attempted to move the files to a new folder but it continues. The weird thing is, Spotify makes exact copies of the songs, but it removes the spaces and they just sit in the local files folder of my phone. I would like to play them from the specific playlist though as it is an album. This issue only persists in around 3 playlists, others are completely fine with no issues with spaces which has confused me a lot. Please help!

I found a way around this!!

Go into your files app, go to On My Iphone > Spotify > Synced files > Go to the song youre looking for. HOLD on the song until it says 'rename'. Then you can rename it to be correct! It's been working for me so far

I've been having the same exact problem but my duplicates have the same name (it doesn't delete the spaces between the words). I've tried everything I could, from clean reinstalling and deleting the Files app, to trying to sync my Local Files from iTunes and nothing. Has anyone found a fix yet?

It stopped happening to me recently, make sure your app is updated. otherwise idk why it stopped happening to me

I've installed Spotify like 5 times in the last couple days, I'm pretty sure it's updated 😭

Updated and reinstalled Spotify. The bug is still there for me.
When will this be fixed?!

It actually did work for a few songs but some others just won't have it. I think this is a temporary solution but I don't want to have to do this with everything when Spotify can just fix their app.

I fixed it temporarily by adding track name and artist metadata to the mp3's i was adding from my local files. Any track with that information will now download onto my phone. It's not a great solution, but it does work.

I tried this, and it worked on every song... EXCEPT FOR ONE SPECIFIC SONG IT WONT WORK ITS SO IRRITATING

It is now April 17th and I am still having this isuse.

It looks like Spotify on my iPhone downloads some songs with a modified title (removes white spaces, multi word titles become concatenated).  My assumption is that since on the playlist, the title has spaces, but local file doesnt, then it greys out the song in the playlist thinking it doesnt have access to it.

Case from February, its 20th April. Spotify are u kidding? Same problem. Galaxy Note 10, Note 20, S23, A71. The application saves files without spaces in name and then "loses" them. When it finds a computer on the network, it downloads the songs again, adding another digit at the end. And over and over again. I don't want to edit several dozen GB of songs just to be able to use them. Do we know which is the older version of the app that does not have this problem?

Hi there!

Have you found a solution yet? If so please let me know l'm struggling with the same issue and its really frustrating.

Thank you!

Hi Joan,

**bleep** will download identical to on my pc and then the app will automatically convert these into identical files and store them locally and rename these new files without spaces/special characters. The files are definitely downloaded as they can usually be accessed just through the local files in library but not on playlists, however recently this has not been working for me too. Redownloading the apps and associated files seems to only work for a short time before this happens again. I have attatched a screen recording of downloaded local files which can be played seemingly only from the library, and now that only seems to work for only the files with no gaps. Please help - Thank you!

Having the same exact issue on my Oneplus 8 pro with Android 13 and latest version of Spotify.

On PC = Name of song is with spaces and some with special characters like (), [] etc.

Once synced to my phone under local storage -> music -> spotify -> synced files = Every filename is without the spaces and or special characters.

Since it does that, once my phone has WIFI turned off/not around local network the local files are unavailable to be played.

Currently having the exact same issue, my local files constantly grey out and need to be redownloaded again and some are playable but they are in my local file folder with no spaces

Yesterday I spent over an hour chatting with Spotify support. I was offered many options, but none of them worked. The last option was to manually move files from the computer to phone to another folder, unlock the local files option on phone, and create new playlists. I think it's a joke.

I have the impression that Spotify support is completely unaware of the problem or blatantly ignores it.
I don't know when or if support will fix the application.

Absolutely ridiculous how little urgency or effort is being put into fixing something that’s been effecting MANY paying users for months now, this is extremely sickening and frustrating, please just fix your own problems instead of copy pasting useless responses to people because it’s just making everything even worse and more frustrating. I’ve had Premium for well over 4 years now and seriously considering switching to something else that actually works since the Spotify team seemingly has absolutely zero concern that their platform they charge people money to use doesn’t work at all anymore and hasn’t for the last couple months, PLEASE fix local files and downloaded files in general and stop telling people it’s their faults. I would have a lot more respect for the Spotify team if they could just acknowledge the problem and work on fixing it instead of doing absolutely nothing.

I strongly suggest that Spotify support should take care of fixing the problem instead of making it difficult for users to provide information about temporary solutions. Please do not edit my comments by deleting parts with a possible temporary solution.

Just because support hasn't been able to solve the problem for months doesn't mean that users have to live with it and agree to it.

My working solution: You need to manually downgrade the application. I found version 8.8.92.700 in which the problem does not occur and everything works.

I have copies of APK files straight from the Play Store collected over the years, but you can use apkpure or apkmirror. Spotify app on Apkpure has same MD5 checksum as mine.

After many years of premium Spotify, I'm close to abandoning the platform. I no longer recommend Spotify to my friends.

If this comment is deleted or edited, I'm done with Spotify once and for all.

This worked!!! So it must be a bug Spotify are aware of but indifferent too, thank you so much - far more helpful than spotify live chat ever were ❤️

Update: The issue has been fixed for me.

I'm now able to play local files again where songs have spaces/special characters in their name.

Might be since last couple of updates, but i'm not sure.

Yes the issue is resolved for me too
