Play from folder feature removed / not working in App and on Desktop

I am aware a similar post like this has already been made, but that was back in 2017/2019. For some reason it's not possible to (shuffle) play playlists from folders anymore. When inside the app, there's no button anymore as for a while now. And now on Desktop when right-clicking a folder and pressing Play it says: "Spotify can't play this right now. If you have the file on your computer you can import it". Which makes no sense at all. At first when they removed this feature I used the in-browser player to enable play on a folder and it would work fine. Now I am unable to use it anymore. It's a shame that they remove features which are actually very useful.

Hey there @Keimpe_Rauwerda,

 

The mobile app does not currently support Shuffle-playing folders, but an idea about this has been submitted here, so feel free to check it out and give it a thumbs up to show your support, if you haven't already.

 

You should be able to play all playlists inside a folder in Shuffle mode with the desktop app though by right-clicking a folder and pressing Play - just make sure Shuffle is toggled on beforehand. As for the error message on desktop, here are a few methods to troubleshoot it:

  • check if there are any corrupted local files and reupload them to your device/playlist here
  • make sure the correct audio output device has been selected, and it's sample rate is set to anywhere between 44.1 kHz and 192 kHz
  • check your hosts file for any entries with "spotify" in the address and remove those lines
  • make sure the app is allowed through your Firewall settings

In case the issue persists, please share a short screen recording which captures this behavior in action so we can have a closer look.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I have realized that the reason it's not working anymore is because I'm using my spotify client to control the television at work which is the reason play from folder doesn't work. After being active for a little while on this community I have really noticed that folders DESPERATELY need a rework. Some features are only supported on certain types of devices, and personalization is also really lacking (changing folder image and such) plus some features like inviting people to a folder. I've said it so many times, a folder should act like a playlist for playlists.

Even though my problem hasn't been solved, thanks for the help.

Right clicking on the folder and selecting play only plays the first playlist in the folder.

Thanks for reaching out in the thread!

@86smopuiM - just to check, do you notice any difference after clearing stored cache from the app? You can check the steps here. It's also worth logging out from the app and back in again once it's done, as completing these steps should resync your account info.

Shouldn't that do the trick, can you let us know the make and model of your device, along with the Spotify version?
