Shuffle

Shuffle

Why is Spotify shuffle the worst thing ever? If I have over 2000 songs in my library I only hear the same 100? Also it's funny I noticed that it only happens with the paid version, the free one does not seem to have this issue. Really trying to avoid going to another services but it drives me insane I've tried smart shuffle vs non smart shuffle and nothing impacts it other than going to the free version.

Hi @Pwbraun, thanks for reaching out!

Your question regarding how Shuffle functions/should function is a very complex one, and one that's been brought up a lot in the Community in the past.

I am not too well-versed in it myself, but Spotify does have a very useful and in-depth explanation of how Shuffle works on the app (and its different permutations) in this Spotify R&D article.

In summary, this is what the article says regarding your question (FYI I used ChatGPT to help me with this):

  • Shuffle isn’t broken — it’s a mix of randomness + behavior tuning by design
  • True random feels repetitive, so Spotify tweaks it to make it more diverse
  • Premium uses a different system (“Fewer Repeats”) which can feel biased
  • Large libraries exaggerate the issue because there’s no full rotation

That’s why you keep hearing the same ~100 songs — it’s a side effect of how randomness + user expectations are balanced and therefore a feature, not a bug.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any further questions 🙂

I can definitely agree that the shuffle system is very prone to repeating songs, sometimes it can even repeat whole parts of the queue!  While I do agree with Pepsi that there's more to it... I also don't agree with some of his points either. I mean... if I fire up my favorite playlist and I hear 3 songs... then I stop, listen to something different, go back to re-starting my favorite playlist within 2 - 3 hours and hear the exact same 3 songs...  yah.  It doesn't happen often, but it does happen and is very difficult to miss.

Anyway: there are a few ways to cope with this. First: you can always open and inspect your current queue using the desktop app (check the option at the bottom right corner), then just remove some songs which you don't want to listen to right now. Start on the desktop, then just continue your queue on your phone.

Another great option is to change your shuffle settings on the fly, by default you can change this to:

  • No (smart) shuffle.
  • Enable shuffle.
  • Enable smart shuffle.

See, cycling this setting like that will also re-adjust your whole queue again. So if you're not happy with the current setting (I'm assuming you have it set to shuffle?) then just click it 3 times to cycle the whole option list and your queue will be heavily reshuffled again.

Hope this can also help!
