Advertisements won't play - have to stop and restart app

I'm trying to change to Spotify from Pandora, but every single time the player starts as soon as an advertisement comes up, the app stops playing and I have to manually stop it and restart it. I never get the promised 30 minutes of ad-free playing because the ads won't play. Any help? Or should I just stick with Pandora? I'm using the iphone x.
