Cellular data turned off but Spotify still working

When Spotify recently updated, my data started being used for Spotify even though in my settings, cellular data was turned off for Spotify. Why is this?

Hi @sdschramm, at this stage there are no known issues with iOS or Spotify causing this.

Can you please confirm for us the following:
* your device
* what version of iOS you are running
* are you just listening to downloaded music?
* do you have sync over cellular enabled in the app?

* your device - iPhone 6
* what version of iOS you are running - 9.3.3
* are you just listening to downloaded music? - listening to music that was already downloaded offline.
* do you have sync over cellular enabled in the app? it was enabled in spotify but disabled in iOS

Hey @sdschramm, this is definitely looking like a bug with iOS, not Spotify. Having a search online does show some forum search results with people reporting that some apps are managing to consume mobile data despite having mobile data disabled for those apps.

My suggestion is to disable sync over cellular data within Spotify, and perhaps leave Spotify running in offline mode. That's assuming that you do not wish to update to iOS 10.

Unfortunately I don't think there's much more we'll be able to do here!

I wouldn't consider that an iOS bug, but rather something wrong with the Spotify app since no other apps on my phone have this problem. Somewhere there is bug in the code that it tricking into thinking its on WiFi or something.

Please make sure the developers are aware and can you reach out to support and  have someone follow up on the case I submitted (07962146) as I still have not gotten a response from them. Thank you.

There's no code in iOS that allows an app to get around a cellular data toggle. If cellular data is disabled for an app, the app acts as if you've turned it off phone wide. This behaviour is just looking like the toggle hasn't worked properly, I've seen it before on beta versions of iOS and a reboot of my phone fixed it.

You've got syncing over cellular data enabled as well which isn't really going to help matters much either if you did have the toggle turned on.

You're also on an old version of iOS which makes troubleshooting difficult as the majority of users are now going to be running on iOS 10+.

There's not really much more we can do for you unfortunately other than assume it's a bug on an old version of iOS.

Hey there @sdschramm!

Thanks for reaching out to us again.
We're sorry to hear that this is still happening.

Are you able to check that your device is all up-to-date for us?

We can also see that you've mentioned you already reached out to Support.

In this case, if you'd prefer to continue looking into this there, that's not a problem. The right team should get back to you shortly, so stay tuned 🙂

Let us know if we can help with anything else. We're always here and happy to lend a hand as best we can.

Regards,

/M

This is happening to me as well! I have disabled the sync over cellular in the app and toggled to not allow data usage.... yet almost 500mb in less than 24 hours???? I listen to downloaded playlists ONLY. What gives?

Hey @Gumption16, can you please confirm for us what version of iOS you are running and also what version of the app you are running?

Would definitely suggest reinstalling Spotify and seeing if that helps to resolve anything. There's a good chance that it could be an iOS bug that is causing this to occur.

Let us know how you get on!

Hey there, I seem to still be having this problem even though cellular data is turned off for Spotify. I'm a Premium member too. I notice when listening to my playlists when it ends the app jumps to a non-downloaded playlist which it shouldn't do with cellular turned off. Any insight?

I just updated to the latest version (8.4.1) and the issue is still occurring.

I am still having this problem. Can you help in any way?

I'm still having this problem - I posted about it below. I've noticed Spotify will jump to a "radio" station after my downloaded playlist has played through instead of just repeating the playlist and will start playing sounds I haven't downloaded despite the fact cellular is off - that is definitely a Spotify glitch and not an iOS issue.

Can you provide any insight?
