Headset controls on Apple Watch app not working (only volume)

Hope someone can help here,

I can no longer control playback on my Apple Watch (Series 3, WatchOS 8.8.1 - up to date) using my bluetooth headsets. I have a pair of Sony WH-1000XM3 and a pair of Anker Soundcore A1.

I can only use the controls on the headsets to adjust the volume, but can't skip, rewind, play or pause. I've tried restarting, reinstalling, repairing, resetting.. but nothing.

This is not an issue with single vs double tap, or primary vs secondary controls, since if I set volume control to double tap/secondary it still works fine.

Both headsets controls work fine with Apple Music on the watch, or if I use Spotify on my phone.
